The role:  
 
Apply today to be a geotechnical design engineer! In this role, you will perform geotechnical engineering design for routine to complex transportation projects. You will also review, critique and recommend changes to consultant’s work to ensure it’s consistent with ODOT standards. This position is crucial for project development, construction and maintenance.

A day in the life:
 
  • Provide conceptual and final geotechnical design recommendations and related cost estimates for the most appropriate economic foundation and geotechnical solution.
  • Provide engineering requirements and needs for the subsurface exploration program and coordinate the execution of the program with geologists and exploration specialists.
  • Determine the most appropriate laboratory and testing programs for soil and rock samples.
  • Evaluate geotechnical design alternatives.
  • Perform geotechnical engineering for routine to complex projects involving roadway and structure designs such as multi span bridges in high seismic risk zones, landslide stabilization, embankment fills on compressible, weak subsurface soils and soil and rock cut slopes.
  • Prepare technical reports that include final foundation/geotechnical design recommendations and unique contract specifications/special provisions.
  • Perform complete review and engineering services to construction personnel for foundation and geotechnical design.
  • Recommend acceptance, rejection or modifications of contractor designs and submittals.
  • Assist with providing consulting geotechnical engineering services to maintenance personnel for urgent and emergency projects such as landslide, rock fall and scour issues.
  • Review staff and consultant provided routine geotechnical engineering work and provide input during the initial scoping phase of Region 3 projects.
  • Support the manager in planning and developing unit goals and budgets.
  • Work is performed in an office environment and outdoors at least 30% of the time in coastal and river environments, on unstable slopes, around construction sites near traffic and heavy equipment and around hazardous materials.
  • Work may require occasional overnight travel and responding to emergencies at any hour.

What we need:
A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering.
 
Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.
 
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
