Position Summary:  
Support and assist the Electrical Design Engineering section with design and planning of required system protection and control facilities.  Performs independent design and system studies on specific projects.  May give direction to subordinate Engineers, Drafters, clerical personnel, Engineering Technicians and Engineering Assistants and assumes such authority as may be delegated.  Perform other duties as required.
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Planning and Analysis:

Plan and develop enhancements to specific protection and control systems.  Perform short circuit studies, breaker rating studies, and other protection related studies and prepare related reports for ERCOT interconnections. Perform protective relay settings for proper protection and coordination of system facilities. Analyze system fault records and report results to Cooperative or other organizations as necessary. Follow and maintain compliance with PRC-027 and other NERC requirements.  Attend ERCOT, NERC or related meetings as required.  Attend technical conferences, meetings or perform other requirements to maintain professional engineering continuing education requirements (Engineer-Project). Assist in project management by performing detailed engineering and economic studies, reviewing of contract specifications and estimating labor, materials and construction costs of projects.  Analyze Cooperative material inventory and prepare purchase order requisitions when required.
Design:
Prepare, analyze, and check engineering drawings, specifications and system data to determine design factors on specific projects requiring protection related equipment including, but not limited to, protective relays, transformers, circuit breakers, motor operators, substation control house equipment, protection related communications equipment, protection related automation equipment, protection related cybersecurity equipment, and general electrical miscellaneous equipment. Design and plan system facilities for projects in accordance with applicable codes and regulations. Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures, maintain safety awareness, and promote all aspects of BEPC’s safety program in a compliance culture that promotes continuous improvement and proactive measures.  Work closely with purchasing department and vendors to insure product specification compliance.
Support:
Diagnose and troubleshoot protection related systems to support operational modifications, repairs, or enhancements. Provide technical support to Brazos Electric personnel within and outside the Engineering Department. Maintain relationships with external contractors, consultants and member cooperative personnel to coordinate job related activities.  Perform field related investigations or inspections.  Perform special electrical related assignments as required.  Work closely with Brazos Electric technicians to assist in completion of construction, testing and trouble calls.  Maintain a working relationship with protection personnel of other interconnected utilities and with related ERCOT personnel.
Education and Experience Requirements:  Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university, preferably with an electric power discipline.  Prefer experience with relay settings and knowledge of the following:
•     ASPEN OneLiner
•     Short circuit studies
•     Breaker rating studies
•     Schweitzer protective relays and automation controllers
•     Familiar with SCADA, microwave, VPNs, and TCP/IP networking
 
Physical and Environmental Requirements:   
The position requires working inside in a controlled environment and occasionally outside in varying weather conditions, sitting for extended periods of time, working overtime and traveling at times with short notice, hearing within normal range, hearing aids are permitted, vision within normal range, corrective lenses are permitted. Must have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license.
