The role:  

 

Bring your engineering expertise to our Astoria Construction Office as a construction inspector 2! In this role, you will ensure daily contract compliance on complex construction projects and provide documentation to support payment and project acceptance according to policies and requirements. Area 1 of Region 2 within the Oregon Department of Transportation extends from the Columbia estuary to approximately Neskowin along US101 and up the Columbia River to Scappoose. This expansive area allows for a wide variety of transportation projects. Project such as bridge replacements, roadway preservation, intersection safety improvements and ADA upgrades modernize and increase safety for all residents and visitors of Oregon visiting the beautiful Oregon Coast. Stream channel restoration projects provide for improved salmon spawning habitat increasing the viability of our beautiful and natural habitat. All ODOT projects are rewarding as they give back to our local communities and the many visitors who choose to recreate and spend time among the many natural wonders of the Oregon Coast.

A day in the life:

  • Determine if contractors are in compliance with project plans and specifications by performing project inspection during the construction phase.
  • Enforce provisions of construction contracts when work or materials do not conform to the specifications. 
  • Interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental standards and permits.
  • Generate project documentation that is required by various regulators, statutes and standards. 
  • Work as a survey crewmember in the field.
  • Attend and engage in meetings in person, online and over the phone.
  • Work may require occasional long hours, working nights and weekends, overnight travel and being on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays.
  • Work is performed in all types of weather conditions, on all terrains, around heavy equipment and traffic, around hazardous chemicals and may require lifting up to 60 pounds.

What we need:

Three and one-half years (42 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.

 

OR

 

An associate's degree in engineering technology from a community college or technical school of engineering and two years of experience directly related to engineering.

 

OR


An equivalent combination of education and experience (such as a bachelor’s degree in engineering plus six months’ engineering experience).

 

Note: If you are currently a transportation maintenance specialist 2 (TMS2) or have been one in the past, in addition to your completed application, please attach section three of your TMS2 position description to receive full credit for your related work. If your experience includes work in multiple maintenance disciplines (e.g. highway, sign, bridge, striping or landscape) please attach section three of the position description for each of the relevant disciplines.

 

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Working knowledge of mathematics.

  • Experience in land surveying.

  • Knowledge and experience with highway construction methods and design standards for highway construction.

  • Knowledge, experience or training in inspection.
