The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and highly talented engineer to perform research in the area of Laser Micromachining, Ultrafast lasers, and hybrid additive manufacturing (AM). Work will include acting as Principal investigator on projects, mechanical design, execution of experiments, sensors data acquisition, and part manufacturing leveraging a variety of laser types. Activities may include, fixture design, investigating laser material interaction, process optimization, collecting and analyzing of in-situ process monitoring data and optical system modifications. The engineer will also be tasked with designing parts via CAD and analyzing data using multiple software tools. Additionally, the candidate will build new laser manufacturing business through contributions to proposal writing and selling the growing laser manufacturing capabilities of UDRI to prospective customers. Work activities may include:
• Leading ultrafast laser focused research projects.
• Designing, integrating, and modifying in-situ process sensors.
• Training others to operate in-situ sensors/suites for custom ultrafast laser systems.
• Optical system design and alignment.
• Hollow core fiber optic integration.
• Design and integration of system controls and feedback loops.
• Travel to customer sites for system installation and testing of novel laser systems.
• Presentation and publication of research.
• Training of engineers and technicians in ultrafast micromachining techniques and concepts.

Minimum Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics from an accredited University.
• Minimum 3 years of directly related experience.
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Masters or doctoral degree in engineering, physics, or business.
• Experience in ultrafast laser micromachining.
• Experience with ultrafast laser micromachining control software (Direct Machine Control, LaserDesk, etc).
• Experience with laser galvometers and other advanced laser micromachining optics.
• Effective ability to communicate both written and verbally, work well with others, and possess the skills to think critically and drive a project to completion with little or no supervision.
• Demonstrated experience with sensors for dynamic processes.
• Understanding of laser/material interaction.
• Publications in the field of micromaching laser processes.
• Demonstrated experience with data acquisition and analysis concepts.
• Experience performing design of experiments (DOE's) and statistical analysis.
• Coding/programming skills (python preferred).
• Basic understanding of machine learning concepts.
• Ability to provide technical leadership for supporting personnel and collaborators.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
