The WI Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking an interested and qualified individual to fill a Structural and Hydraulic Design Engineer (Structural Engineer Transportation Entry, Senior, or Advanced) - Project Position for the Bureau of Structures!
This full-time project position will be headquartered in Madison, WI.
Position Summary
This position assists with or performs hydrologic, hydraulic, and scour computations necessary for the design of stream crossing bridges to safely pass flood flows and to conform to State and Federal floodplain regulations. This position assists with or provides technical guidance in the areas of hydraulics, hydrology, scour, and preparation of preliminary bridge design and plans to Regional Office and Statewide Bureau personnel and engineering consultants. This position communicates with local, state, and federal agencies, public officials, and the public regarding hydrologic, hydraulic, and structure design aspects. This position requires working to extensive knowledge in hydrologic, hydraulic and scour methodologies, in addition to working to extensive technical knowledge of bridge design and design specifications, policies, and standards.
Extensive training in the Structures Design Section will be provided to this position. The study of AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications, Wisconsin Bridge Manual, and Structures Design Section policy are included at the entry level.
Salary Information
The Entry level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $52,000 to $62,005, plus excellent benefits.
The Senior level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $66,560 to $84,240, plus excellent benefits.
The Advanced level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $79,040 to $91,520, plus excellent benefits.
A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.
Job Details
This position does require the ability to travel on an independent basis, including occasional statewide travel.
Wisconsin residency is required for project positions.
These project/permanent positions have been authorized for a period of 24 months (May 2024) and could be considered for renewal for an additional 24 months. Project/permanent positions are eligible for all benefits (including paid time off) as well as civil service status. After successful completion of the 12 month probationary period (if applicable), employees in these positions will attain permanent status and will be eligible to transfer to other permanent positions similar to other permanent employees in state service. This allows employees to be considered for other similar positions when the project position approaches its expiration date of 24 or 48 months.
Minimum requirement: 4-year degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited University, Engineer in Training (EIT) credential, OR Professional Engineer (PE) credential.
A minimally qualified candidate will have a background that includes hydrology and hydraulic courses or a combination of hydrology and hydraulic courses and work experience.  All applicants must list at least 4 structures courses along with a brief description of each course in their application materials (letter of qualifications, resume).
In addition to the above:
To be eligible at the Senior level, candidates must have 3.5 years of professional experience with hydrologic and hydraulic engineering.
To be eligible at the Advanced level, candidates must have a valid Professional Engineering (PE) registration and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
