Job Description:

Thorlabs, Inc. is looking for a talented and motivated individual to work as a manufacturing engineer for our Laser Division. The position will work across multiple groups and product families to develop assembly instructions, test procedures, and quality control practices for our new products. Additionally, the position will work on improving manufacturing practices on existing products by reviewing work instructions and test protocols, and by streamlining the production workflow. The successful candidate should have a proven record of industry experience managing manufacturing processes in the photonics field. While the position resides at our Jessup, Maryland facility in the Washington DC metro area, it will also require remote management of our manufacturing practices at other Laser Division sites within the US. This position requires a minimal level of traveling to other US sites, approximately at a rate of 1 week per quarter.

 

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the design engineering teams to develop assembly instructions for a broad range of laser, amplifier, and laser accessory products.
  • Design and implement mechanical, electrical, and optical testing procedures for components and finished products, including automated test procedures to improve efficiency.
  • Implement quality control practices including incoming inspection on parts and outgoing inspection on finished products.
  • Manage evaluations and repairs for nonconforming products.
  • Work with the production planning and inventory control teams to manage manufacturing and assembly supplies.

 

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years' industry experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in the photonics industry is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of fiber optics is a plus.

 

Education:

  • Education: BS/MS in a related field of engineering.

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Working knowledge and hands-on experience with test automation software, e.g. LabView or Python.
  • Experience with optical and electrical measurements instruments such as spectrum analyzers, power meters, and beam profilers is a plus.
  • Experience using enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is a plus.
