The role: 

 

As a roadway designer, you will work as part of a team to design moderately complex highway transportation construction projects. Projects typically involve freeway safety and overlay, rural and urban arterial highways, major bridge replacement, city streets, county roads and more. Apply today!

A day in the life:

  • Prepare and design the roadway portion of plans, special provisions and estimates in compliance with federal, state and local design standards.

  • Consult with and coordinate contract plan preparations with other units.

  • Review design alternatives to find benefits regarding public safety, project goals and cost savings.

  • Participate on project teams and provide technical guidance on project development.

  • Complete design and cost estimates.

  • Answer questions from other staff, the public and other agencies.

  • Provide design support during construction which includes design changes, reviewing materials submitted and three dimensional design information.

  • Present and implement approved team proposals and provide feedback during team meetings.

  • Remote work options available! Work is performed in a typical office environment with occasional field scoping, inspection trips and meetings throughout the region.

What we need:

  • Completion of and passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and one year of experience applying professional engineering theory, principles and methods.

  • Basic knowledge of field construction practices and principles.

  • Basic knowledge of roadway design techniques used to produce plans and drawings.

  • Working knowledge of InRoads and MicroStation software.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience building and developing working relationships with peers, colleagues and customers to achieve a common goal.
