The Instructional Design Specialist in the Center for Online Learning is an entry to mid-level position responsible for collaborating with faculty members to design and develop pedagogically sound online and blended courses, programs, and other technology-enhanced instructional materials utilizing strong technical, project management, and coordination skills to ensure goals and timelines are met. This position will develop and lead faculty and staff professional development activities in areas of instructional design and instructional technology as well as research and evaluate new and emerging technologies and instructional design theories.

The Instructional Design Specialist must be able to convey complex technical information through summarizing and simplification techniques in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience; be a self-motivated worker who works effectively independently and as part of a team; leads and manages projects and gathers consensus.

This position works collaboratively with members of the Center for Online Learning to provide recommendations on the strategic, tactical, and operational issues associated with the integration of new instructional technology to support online and blended courses.



Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology or a closely related field.
2. At least one year of instructional design experience using design theory, principles, and practices.
3. Professional experience supporting online learning initiatives.
4. Experience working with an academic learning management system (LMS).
5. Strong written and oral communication skills.
6. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to convey complex technical information.
7. Proven knowledge of accessibility compliance issues including section 508 ADA compliance.
8. Experience building online content with digital authoring software such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate.
9. Ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff in a team-based environment.


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

1. A master’s degree or higher in instructional design, instructional technology, or a closely related field
2. Experience creating and facilitating high quality professional development training sessions.
3. Experience creating digital environments for learning such as discussion forums, activities or assessments.
4. Experience working with HTML and CSS to develop visually appealing online courses.
5. Proficient graphic and visual design skills utilizing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.
6. Experience with video capture and hosting technologies.
7. Experience with or training in Quality Matters practices.
8. Experience interpreting and applying copyright and fair use guidelines in the context of eLearning and multimedia design.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
