JOB SUMMARY
:
Clemson University's Virtual Prototyping of Autonomy Enabled Ground Systems (VIPR-GS) Center is looking for a Research Associate - Autonomy Integrator to fulfill the following duties:
This individual will manage autonomy integration testing and innovation initiatives across multiple experimental facilities within the Virtual Prototyping of autonomy enabled Ground Systems (VIPR-GS) Center.
Working closely with students, technical staff, and faculty, this person will support test planning and collection of research data and help develop new testing capabilities.
Testing and integration of machine learning, vehicle autonomy code and related sensors into research vehicles, robots, test rigs, and combinations of these devices are within the scope of this position.
Test facilities range from full vehicle systems to individual component testing in specialized test cells.
Other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
50% - Essential
- Oversees engineering activities for autonomy testing facilities across the VIPR-GS Center. Maintains test system software, manages test article selection, configuration and setup, designs test procedures, operates test facilities, and processes data as needed. Aids in the integration of research efforts related to autonomous system design, control, and optimization. Provides research coordination within a larger distributed team and has strong technical, communication, and project management skills.
25% - Essential
- Oversees the experimental autonomous system activities of students and others engaged in VIPR-GS research and related activities; this includes Deep Orange projects. Is a mentor to student researchers and Deep Orange students performing experimental work related to autonomous systems. Works collaboratively with university faculty members to support VIPR-GS research efforts. Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
15% - Essential
- Perform research integration related to areas of perception, planning, control and validation of connected and autonomous vehicles, robotics, cyber-physical systems, controls, verification, and/or machine learning. Maintain and operate the perception and control software for an autonomous vehicle platform. Support students and research staff during their development and testing of sensing and control algorithms in simulation and on vehicle platforms. Lead the development of a simulation environment to enable the simulation of autonomy features.
10% - Essential
- Designs and coordinates the build, calibration, installation, and testing of new VIPR-GS Center specific research equipment. Develops or acquires innovative software capabilities related to autonomous system testing that advance cutting-edge research in this area.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
:
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering or a related field
Work Experience
- 8+ years experience operating powertrain testing facilities, including system integration or MS degree with 2-5 years experience operating powertrain testing facilities, including system integration
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
:
Education
- Master's Degree in engineering or a related field
Education Area
- Mechanical, Electrical or Software Engineering
Work Experience
- Machine learning or vehicle autonomy testing, particularly the software systems that operate the tests. Experience with Hardware-in-the-loop testing is also desirable.
Licenses & Certifications
- Must be eligible to obtain a US Government security clearance
