SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER
Fuel Tech Inc. Position Overview

Responsible for day-to-day project engineering activities.  May also be involved in the installation, start-up and troubleshooting of the equipment at the project site.  Works with minimal direction from his/her supervisor and may be functionally assigned to a Project Manager for a specific project. 

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN OUR WARRENVILLE, ILLINOIS OFFICE

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepares detailed project engineering designs for medium to large projects including development of the flow and pressure tables for the process flow diagram, pipe sizing, and pump and control valve sizing and selection.  Ensures that all equipment and services meet applicable codes and standards for design, safety and quality.  

 Produces and utilizes all engineering drawings necessary to construct the project including P&ID, fabrication, BOM, and vendor drawings; may check the drawings of other engineers.

Generates and processes equipment and electrical/controls (in conjunction with the Electrical, Instrument and Controls Manager) purchase orders and follows-up on delivery of items.  Coordinates orders and deliveries with mechanical, electrical and structural fabrication vendors. Responsible for drafting a CAR or NCR documents as needed for assigned projects.

Supervises and monitors equipment fabrication including system modules, equipment enclosures, tanks, chemical process vessels, etc.; may document results of equipment testing.

May schedule equipment shipping, including shipping between vendors and to customer.

Executes field equipment startup, commissioning and may prepare all logs/records/reports to document the process and results.

Communicates project status through project reports, meeting minutes, action lists and all other required communications.

Maintains awareness of technical developments in assigned areas.  Recommends new products or improved sources for goods and services to the supervisor.

Coaches, mentors and provides limited training to junior level project engineers; may review the technical work of junior level project engineers, provide feedback and have input into performance evaluations, but is not responsible for preparing and administering performance evaluations.

Adheres to Fuel Tech policies, procedures, safety plans and assigned goals, and abides by all laws, codes and site-specific work rules.  Strives to exceed the client’s expectations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not directly supervise other Fuel Tech employees and is based on self-direction.

Technical Skills Required:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:  Extensive knowledge of engineering tools and methods. Requires knowledge of boiler plant work practices. Considerable experience with the selection of pumps, valves, instrumentation, electrical equipment and controls.  Proficient with process industry standards and safety codes, e.g. AWS D1.1 & D1.6, ASME B31., NFPA 85 and UBC. Exposure and/or demonstrated proficiency with hydraulic pipe modeling software such as AFT, Flow of Fluids, Bentley Pipe Design and Analysis Software.

Abilities:  Able to perform duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision and oversight.   Applies engineering principles to solve complicated design problems.  Demonstrates attention to detail and can develop and articulate design concepts graphically and verbally. Understands and is able to discuss complex project scope and schedule.  Prioritizes and plans work activities.  

Skills:  Reads, analyzes and interprets technical data and information. Planning and organization skills. Good computer tool skills. Writes reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Mechanical, electrical and construction systems  experience and proficiency.  Presents complex information and responds professionally to questions from peers, clients and vendors.  

Education and Experience

Requires a BS in Engineering and experience with LNB, OFA, SNCR and SCR.  Proficient with the primary responsibilities of the position and extensive experience with utility boilers, industrial furnaces and related equipment is essential.  Established competency in the use of Project Design, Spreadsheet, Presentation and Word Processing software. Requires 5 to 10 years of project engineering with broad experience in designing and executing engineering projects.

Is able to be effective while working under tight deadlines or situations where individual performance is critical to project success.  Keeps management aware of higher level issues and understands the importance of timely communications.

Design – Follows standards and instructions and is able to generates creative solutions to the benefit of the client and Fuel Tech, Inc.   Applies solid documentation and organization to design deliverables.  Maintains keen awareness to detail.  Maintains understanding and application of current design codes.

Excellence and Quality Management – Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.  Specific computer or testing skills may be required for specific assignments.  Must have experience with industry design standards and codes.
