Job Description:

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)’s Staunton District would like for strong structural engineers to consider an Engineer Senior Structure and Bridge opportunity within our Inspections area. In this role, you will serve as the assistant to the Assistant District Engineer for Structure and Bridge Inspections.

Below is a snapshot of what you will get to experience each day:
• Manage the load-rating program for in-service bridges and culverts in accordance with AASHTO requirements and VDOT policies and procedures.
• Assist with the coordination and quality assurance for in-house inspections as well as the inspection programs of municipalities and other external parties in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards and VDOT regulations.
• Assist with managing subordinate staff and other business matters related to the Safety Inspection program.

You will also have the opportunity to perform load-rating analysis, perform structural inspection for bridges, ancillary structures, and more, and advise district staff and other stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience applying civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering to include strength of materials, statics and structural analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Bridge Rating Software such as AASHTOWare BrR.
  • Ability to perform hands-on safety inspections, work out of doors in all types of weather, at great heights and in confined spaces, and to use all required equipment.
  • Ability to model a wide variety of structure types and configurations in order to determine the load carrying capacity in accordance with federal and state law, AASHTO guidelines and VDOT policy.
  • Experience in structural steel design, reinforced and prestressed concrete design and soil mechanics.
  • Knowledge of specifications, codes and regulations related to structural design including AASHTO and LRFD structural design standards).
  • Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Valid Professional Engineer’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and experience with the inspection of bridge, culvert, and ancillary structures (large highway signs, traffic signals and light poles) with preferred training in an approved ancillary inspection training course.
  • Knowledge and experience with element-level bridge inspections in accordance with the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Element Inspection with preference for experience with the AASHTOWare bridge management software Br|M® (formerly Pontis®).
  • Skill in the use of applications for structural design and analysis. Knowledge of the AASHTOWare analysis software Br|R® (formerly Virtis®) and considerable experience and skill in the use for the analysis of steel, concrete and timber structures. Ability to interpret the analysis output and make recommendations for field posting restrictions based on the computational results.
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a focus in Structural Engineering
  • Experience managing projects and knowledge of consultant contract administration procedures and documentation. Qualification as a Bridge Safety Inspection Team Leader as required by FHWA in the NBIS with knowledge and experience with element-level bridge inspections in accordance with the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Element Inspection.
  • Experience in the design and analysis of bridges and structures and using AASHTO’s LRFD design specifications.
  • Experience in bridge design engineering, repair, and rehabilitation.
