Job Description:

The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a skilled technician to manage, operate, and maintain metal additive manufacturing (AM) and machining equipment across two metal AM labs (AFRL - Wright Patterson AFB and UDRI main campus). Work will include operation and advancement of both commercial and custom research metal AM machines (including an open architecture Concept Laser M2) and all supporting equipment. The technician will work with lab managers and scientists to prepare parts for printing/manufacturing via CAD/CAM and operate equipment in accordance with research objectives. The ability to make machine modifications and troubleshoot one-of-a-kind systems is highly important. The overarching goals of these labs are to better understand the effects of laser manufacturing processes on materials, and to design, build, and operate next generation AM machines.


Minimum Qualifications

T2 – Position
• High school graduation or its equivalent.
• 3 years’ experience operating metal AM machines (laser powder bed fusion machines preferred).
• Experience with machining equipment.
• Experience with CAD/CAM software.
• Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Ability to work well with others in a team environment and motivate fellow team members.
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

T3 – Position
All T2 requirements plus 8 years’ experience.

T4 – Position
All T3 requirements plus 12 years’ experience.
 


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

 

In addition to the minimum requirements, a preferred candidate will also have:
• Experience operating laser-based manufacturing equipment in support of research.
• Experience with Concept Laser multi-laser systems is a plus.
• Machining/fabrication experience (CNC Mill or similar is a plus).
• Experience with mechanical testing and specimen fabrication.
• Basic understanding of data acquisition and analysis concepts


Special Instructions to Applicants

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
