Job Description:

Are you interested in working for UDRI, a national leader in scientific and engineering research, serving government, industry and nonprofit customers? UDRI is seeking qualified applicants to apply for the Associate Materials Engineer position within the Sustainment Materials Engineering division. This is a full time benefit eligible position that offers health, dental and vision insurance, retirement, disability, tuition assistance, vacation/sick accrual and holiday pay.

The position will be focused on assisting other researchers in understanding the material science issues of additive manufacturing and connecting material properties to part end-use requirements. This will include assisting in planning and conducting experiments, analysis and reporting efforts related to material/process risk assessments and selection, troubleshooting, process improvement and/or material replacement, as well as structure-property and process-property relationships, and validation of part performance vs. end-use requirements. This position may involve maintaining equipment used in experiments or material characterization. This position will be initially focused on metal powder bed fusion additive manufacturing.


Minimum Qualifications
1. BS degree in relevant engineering field (such as materials, chemical, mechanical)
2. 1 year of direct experience with bulk material characterization (e.g. tensile, fatigue, hardness) and surface characterization (e.g. microscopy, EDS/composition analysis)
3. 1 year of experience with the post-process of manufactured metal materials (e.g. heat treatment, surface modification)
4. Technical writing proficiency; experience writing technical reports and standard job operating procedures
5. Experience with design of experiments and statistical analysis
6. Experience with a manufacturing or testing operation relating to compliance with military standards
7. Due to the nature of this position, US citizenship is required


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

1. MS degree in relevant engineering field (such as materials, chemical, mechanical)
2. 1 year of experience with metals additive manufacturing in a manufacturing and/or industry setting
3. At least 1 year of experience with the characterization of material surfaces and corrosion products
4. Experience working in a manufacturing environment
5. Demonstrated capability of working in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment
6. Working knowledge of US Air Force policies and procedures
