This position reports to the Process Engineering Superintendent.

This position is located in Augusta, Georgia, U.S.A and is not available for remote work.

What you will do:

  • Typical project work might consist of the following:
    • Develop inspection and preventive maintenance programs for Mechanical Equipment, execution of equipment reliability/ performance improvement studies, and development of procedures for repair, replacement or modification of Mechanical Equipment.
    • Perform immediate support activities, including technical, supervisory or troubleshooting support on problems such as component failure, machinery condition analysis
    • Perform quality control/technical support to ongoing maintenance activities where unforeseen problems are encountered
    • Perform interdepartmental consultation on equipment or material selection.
  • Promote and actively participate in "ADAPT" Behavioral Safety Process and Environmental Stewardship activities
  • Maintain safety awareness, insist on compliance with safety rules, and promote/encourage the company Safety processes. Ensure that safety is a primary consideration for any activity recommended or undertaken
  • Evaluate rotating equipment within the unit operations to improve operating efficiency and rate, product quality, on-stream factor and economy
  • Develop and make recommendations for new process designs and modifications for assigned areas to ensure maximum operating efficiency, return on investment, and safety
  • Prepare process flow sheets, energy balances, material specifications, etc., in order to provide sufficient information for the Project Engineering group to prepare detailed specifications for cost estimation and construction
  • Provide daily process engineering support to Operations on operating problems and to Maintenance Engineering on equipment performance and materials problems
  • Provide technical recommendations to permit plant operation within state and federal government air and water pollution control requirements
  • Provide technical support to departments outside Operations
  • Review all process designs and modifications for safety implications and requirements
  • Provide technical support as required to the planning and performance of turnarounds and planned outages.
  • Maintain and upgrade personal competency in their field of expertise, staying current with the latest advances in technology.
  • Provide technical input or consultation to plant technical personnel outside the Process Engineering Department.
  • Develop major overhaul scopes for plant equipment based on anticipated repairs, known problems, machinery performance and available downtime. Develop machinery overhaul procedures to ensure the most efficient methods are used.
  • Develop and provide necessary technical input for the establishment of effective preventive maintenance (PM) programs and/or technical procedures. Provide recommendations to ensure that the plant takes full advantage of or recognizes the latest equipment developments, diagnostic methods, and maintenance techniques.
  • Support Maintenance and/or Project Engineering on an emergency basis which can potentially be on nights and/or weekends.
  • Work daily with area team members under the direction of the area Operations Manager to accomplish plant objectives in the following priority areas of Safety, Environmental, Quality, Reliability, Production, Efficiency, Cost Reduction and Innovation
  • Perform and contribute to thorough process reviews
  • Perform Hazard and Operability Studies (Hazops) and "What If' analyses on current operations and on proposed changes to plant equipment and systems via the plant Process Safety Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Perform and contribute to Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA) and incident investigations and completes assigned action items on schedule
  • Closely monitor real time and historical plant data from log sheets, data historian, lab analysis, walk through, etc. to detect abnormalities and to optimize rotating equipment operations
  • Interact daily with operators and shift supervisors to learn and share knowledge of the plant operations and to meld "reality" with "theoretical"
  • Perform and support training for Operations and Engineering personnel as needed
  • Ensure that Process Flow Diagram (PFD's), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDts), Steam Balances and Standard Operating Procedures are complete and up to date
  • Promote and contributes to successful implementation of projects by providing accurate, timely and thorough design input / design review and by facilitating communications with area personnel Stay abreast of current technologies in process equipment design and operation to implement such technologies where applicable to improve plant reliability and operations
  • Gain knowledge of day-to-day operations of production unit and remain informed of operational issues and upsets
  • Inform supervisor on current activities, significant developments and technical problems
  • Prepare month end production reports and utility consumption reports for financial accounting
  • Write letters and reports incidental to assignments; schedules and conducts meetings with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and other technical personnel

What you will bring:

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience – minimum 0-1-year experience
  • Co-op experience in chemical plant, refinery, or other processing or manufacturing industry preferred
  • Basic understanding of plant processes and operations along with utilization of engineering knowledge
  • Strong organizational skills and good communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of process chemistry and project economics
