Join our construction team in The Dalles, Oregon as a construction inspector 3! In this role, you will perform construction inspection, assist the quality control compliance specialist (QCCS) and the contract administration specialist (CAS) in the administration of construction projects and office engineering. The goal of this recruitment is to fill this position at an engineering specialist 3 level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for an engineering specialist 2 ($3,609 - $5,601) to apply, as we may consider underfilling the position until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for an engineering specialist 3. Underfill training will not exceed three years.
 
A day in the life:
 
  • Perform duties as primary inspector on moderate to high complexity construction projects.
  • Enforce contractor compliance to plans and specifications.
  • Ensure final contract estimates are complete and determine final quantities of materials.
  • Perform routine engineering calculations to determine project quantities and for the horizontal and vertical control of transportation facilities.
  • Monitor safety issues and take appropriate action when there is a problem or report safety concerns to the office.
  • Assist the quality control compliance specialist in administration of the quality assurance program on transportation construction projects.
  • Assist the contract administration specialist in administration of contract payments and proper documentation.
  • At least 50% of the work is performed in the field and requires working in inclement weather (storm, snow, ice and rain), in close proximity to highway traffic or construction equipment and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Must work with radioactive sources and be able to lift up to 50 pounds of equipment and materials, climb ladders and traverse uneven terrain when performing duties.

What we need for an engineering specialist 3:
Five and one-half years (66 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.
 
OR
 
An associate's degree in engineering technology from a recognized community college or technical school of engineering and four years of experience directly related to engineering.
 
OR
 

An equivalent combination of education and experience (such as a bachelor’s degree in engineering plus two and one-half years’ engineering experience).
 
What we need for an engineering specialist 2 (underfill):
Three and one-half years (42 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.
 
OR
 
An associate's degree in engineering technology from a community college or technical school of engineering and two years of experience directly related to engineering.
 
OR
 
An equivalent combination of education and experience (such as a bachelor’s degree in engineering plus six months’ engineering experience).
 
Note: If you are currently a transportation maintenance specialist 2 (TMS2) or have been one in the past, in addition to your completed application, please attach section three of your TMS2 position description to receive full credit for your related work. If your experience includes work in multiple maintenance disciplines (e.g. highway, sign, bridge, striping or landscape) please attach section three of the position description for each of the relevant disciplines.

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

Note: You do not need to have all of these qualities to be eligible for this position. 
 
  • Experience providing construction inspection on heavy civil projects.
    • Preference may be given to those with a current ODOT General Construction Inspector Certification.
  • Experience performing project development plan and specification review.
  • Experience or training that demonstrates interest in public service, construction or construction inspection.
  • Experience working positively and collaboratively with coworkers, managers, contractors and the public.
  • Experience working independently with limited supervision.
