Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 


The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking talented and innovative engineers to fill three Construction Project Inspector positions in our Project Engineering Office in South Seattle. Under the supervision of the Lead Inspector, you will ensure compliance with contract plans and specifications including environmental permits during days, nights, evenings, and weekends. As the Construction Project Inspectors, you will be responsible for preparing calculations and notes to support and initiate payment to the contractor for work completed and perform material sampling/testing related to inspection duties when requested. Our top candidates must have exceptional communication skills as these roles will also provide clarifications of contract requirements to the contractor and subcontractors and find answers to their questions. 


What to Expect

These positions may be required to perform work around heavy construction equipment, construction materials, and traffic. Hazards could include work on uneven ground, climb ladders, work in inclement weather.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction Project Inspectors will:

  • Collaborate with the materials engineering team to ensure that all materials are sampled and tested according to the contract requirements.
  • Ensure no permanent contract materials are placed without prior approval. 
  • Prepare field note records and other pay notes utilizing Share Point software or paper copies.
  • Prepare field reports and take and electronically files photographs documenting construction activities and issues.
  • Assist Lead Inspector with training and leading staff.
  • Perform materials sampling and testing when requested.



To be considered for these opportunities, at least one the following are required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field. -OR
  • Associate's Degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3. -OR 
  • Associate's Degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and an Engineering-in-Training Certification. -OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Technician 3. -OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and an Engineering-in-Training Certificate. 


In addition to one of the above, the following are also required

  • Ability to follow safety policies and regulations. 
  • Ability to exercise sound engineering judgement and interpret and analyze construction contract plans, specification, permits, and other documentation for conformance with policies, regulations, and standards.
  • Knowledge of construction/engineering procedures and practices, research methods and data collection, communication, and correspondence practices.
  • Ability to become a WSDOT Certified Inspector.
  • Ability to traverse uneven surfaces, work in confine spaces, climb ladder to access incomplete structures and manipulate and transport up to 35 pounds; sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to adjust the work schedule to meet business needs including evenings, nights, and weekends for at least six months of the year or more.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally.
  • A valid unrestricted Washington State driver's license. 


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: 

  • Experience as a construction inspector inspecting drainage, HMA, bridge construction, environmental and in-water work.
  • Experience working on major highways with complex traffic control set ups.
  • Experience inspecting fish passage projects with environmentally vulnerable project locations.
  • Experience acting as an on-site lead representing an agency.
  • Experience mentoring and directing the duties of coworkers.

  • The listed salary includes the legislative approved 5% King County premium. In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
