Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to work at our factory in Richardson, TX. Benning Power Electronics makes Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), battery chargers, and backup power systems for some of the largest companies in the world in the chemical, telecommunications, and public transportation industries. We serve a niche market by providing high-reliability, customized solutions instead of mass-produced standard products. Our equipment is used in critical applications that cannot tolerate a loss of power. Benning is a global company based in Germany with offices in many countries; the US subsidiary is responsible for sales, engineering, manufacturing, and field service in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Starting with the customer’s requirements, you will select standard AC-to-DC and DC-to-AC power modules from Benning’s product line to use as building blocks for creating a power conversion system. You will select peripheral components such as transformers, circuit breakers, voltage and current measurement devices, etc., based upon their electrical and mechanical characteristics. You will create the electrical schematics for the system based upon guidelines for wiring and cabling. You will create the mechanical layout drawings based upon guidelines for arranging the components in cabinets. You will use our Enterprise Resource Management software to create parts and Bills of Material.

In addition to design work, you will answer questions that arise during the assembly of the products in our factory. You will also help troubleshoot the equipment when problems occur during testing, and occasionally provide troubleshooting help over the phone for problems at the customers’ locations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Design power conversion systems (10kVA to 200kVA) such as Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), rectifiers, and battery chargers for industrial and telecom customers using Benning’s standard UPS, AC-DC, and DC-AC modules
• Select electrical components such as circuit breakers, fuses, relays, meters, cables, busbars, connectors, transformers, disconnect switches, etc.
• Verify the suitability of all components with regards to current, power, and voltage ratings; electrical clearances; heat dissipation; short circuit current rating
• Research and verify compliance to standards such as Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), etc.
• Create design documentation including one-line diagrams, system schematics, cabinet layout drawings, datasheets, and Bills of Material
• Create other documentation such as failure analysis reports, user manuals, quality and compliance reports, test procedures, etc.
• Create and maintain items in Enterprise Resource Management system
• Understand the software functionality that controls the operation of the equipment
• Understand the User Interface configuration tool for customizing displays, alarm settings, digital inputs and outputs, etc.
• Troubleshoot problems that occur during testing, commissioning, or in-service
• Review the work of other engineers and field service personnel
• Resolve production issues
• Support new product development, product standardization, and design optimization
• Support sales and marketing efforts

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with a minimum of five years’ professional experience
• Minimum of three years’ experience with UPS’, rectifiers, inverters, DC-DC converters, or other power conversion equipment
• Solid understanding of power electronics including
