The National Suborbital Research Center (NSRC) provides engineering and data systems
support enabling research within the NASA Airborne Science Program (ASP) fleet. Our data
systems provide a common interface to the onboard networking, data recording, telemetry
and situational awareness tools that make many large, modern airborne field campaigns
possible. We’re looking for a flexible, motivated individual to help maintain and grow our
capabilities, as well as participate directly in the support of research activities.
Position description:
The DevOps engineer will work with the NSRC Team to maintain and deploy primarily Linux
based embedded systems onboard research aircraft and corresponding ground-based
infrastructure. Responsibilities will include:
Development of automated installation and maintenance procedures for traditional and
non-internet embedded systems.
Development of deployment solutions for internally developed software.
Work with NSRC and NASA Teams to ensure system security and compliance with
Agency and Federal IT Security standards.
Assist with development of new software and capabilities aboard NASA’s ASP fleet.
Work with customers to define mission requirements and implement solutions.
Work with customers to interface their equipment with NSRC and ASP Systems.
Deploy with ASP aircraft to operate data system and SATCOM equipment in support of
science campaigns.
Develop and maintain appropriate documentation and training materials to allow team
members and customers of various backgrounds and disciplines to successfully operate
NSRC provided services and equipment.
Up to 25% travel required. Specific travel schedule and locations will vary.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or greater in computer science, a physical science, engineering, or
information systems.
Proficiency with Linux and Linux Systems administration and diagnostic tools.
Familiar with standard network services, including HTTP/HTTPS, FTP, NTP and SSH.
Familiarity with basic networking and network diagnostic tools.
Must be able to communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of coworkers and
clientele.
Must have excellent customer service skills.
Must have some software development experience.
Must be able to obtain a US Passport and Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass an FAA Class 3 flight physical.
Must be able to pass a federal background check.
Must be able to fly aboard a research aircraft for up to 12 hours.
Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
Desired Skills:
Familiarity with USGCB, CIS, NIST, FISMA or other security standards or benchmarks.
Familiarity with Test Driven Development.
Experience with DevOps tools and techniques, Ansible experience being strongly
desired.
Familiarity with Jira Administration.
