The Opportunity

WSDOT has an exciting opportunity for a Transportation Engineer 3. This position is integral to the Organization’s mission for design, construction, right of way of highways and fish passage projects, by managing survey crews and drone flight teams. In this role, you will oversee multiple survey crews, develop survey work plans, and assign projects to the crews. As the Transportation Engineer 3, you will be responsible for setting project expectations and reviewing the work performed of the crews when collecting survey data. 
 
What to Expect

This position performs hands on work and/or supervises others that perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors, in inclement weather, traversing rough, steep, and uneven terrain, and near traffic and construction activities. 

 

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Supervisor of Survey Parties will:

  • Monitor and track project schedules and expenditures; review progress and determine if the project can be completed within schedule and budget. 
  • Develop options for schedule and cost recovery. 
  • Communicate project status to supervisor and project offices.
  • Serve as a member on survey crews as needed.
  • Coordinate work with design and construction offices.
  • Review survey requests and define scope of work. 
  • Conduct field reviews and develop project schedules, estimates and workforce projections.
  • Perform QA/QC procedures on survey data prior to transmittal to offices. 
  • Review survey data for errors and conformance to WSDOT survey standards.
  • Review drone flight requests and define scope of work; communicate drone flight needs to Pilot In Charge (PIC).
  • Operate conventional and GPS survey equipment; purchase survey equipment, materials and supplies. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2, Bridge Engineer 2 or Transportation Planning Specialist 2 or equivalent such as leading survey field crew.
  • Skills to communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
  • Advanced knowledge of surveying and engineering principles.
  • The ability works in inclement weather traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain, and work near traffic and construction activities.
  • The ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and/or split shifts. 
  • The ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 40 pounds from one location to another. 
  • The ability to use WSDOT standard computer software.
  • The ability to operate and maintain survey equipment, instruments, and software.
  • The ability to read, interpret and follow instructions, contracts, policies, and procedures.
  • A valid driver’s license. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: 

  • A Washington State Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) or Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT).

  • Travel is an expectation of this position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
