The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced technician to serve as Lab Technician/Core Driller to join our Materials Laboratory in South Seattle. The primary undertaking of this position will be to perform various materials tests. The successful candidate appointed into this position will have an enthusiasm for working hands on in collecting materials samples on job sites as well as testing such samples in a laboratory environment. As the Lab Technician/Core Driller, the appointee will serve as a key team member on our construct ion projects as they will be testing the integrity of construction materials as well as providing other support functions.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Lab Technician/Core Driller will:

  • Perform log-in, curing, and testing of concrete cylinders, grout cubes, and PCC/HMA cores (density/thickness) as required by specification. 
  • Independently work when sampling concrete aggregate from commercial suppliers within the region. 
  • Control log-in, drying, splitting, and testing of aggregate soil samples for gradation, density, specific gravity, proctor, pH and resistivity as required by specification. 
  • Enter sample and test data into the MATS reporting database. 
  • Transport nuclear gauges to HQ Materials Lab for repair and calibration, and help to maintain and keep regional labs in a clean and orderly environment. 
  • Operate coring machine and perform pavement coring on construction projects as well as other highways.
  • Perform flagging as part of the Materials Lab team for coring operation.

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Two (2) years of experience in materials testing
  • Current WA Qualified Tester Certification (WAQTC) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. 
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment around ovens and furnaces with temperatures ranging from 140 – 1000 degree Fahrenheit. 
  • Ability to transport Nuclear Gauges
  • Ability to manipulate up to 60lbs of equipment and materials
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions on uneven terrain working next to high volume of traffic in inclement weather and stand for long periods
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled shifts and at nights per the needs of the project. 
  • The ability to consistently and dependably be at work and allow for flexibility in work schedules. 
  • The ability to work independently, schedule and prioritize workload, with minimal supervision.
  • Current WA State Flagger certification

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Knowledge and experience operating a core drilling machine.
