Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 


The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced project engineer looking to advance their career into a senior leadership role and serve as Assistant Project Engineer. The primary undertaking of this position is the delivery of projects requiring the administration of construction contracts to ensure their completion is on time, on budget, and completed safely with the least amount of impacts to the traveling public as necessary. The successful candidate appointed into this position I expected to consider personal, coworker, and public safety a top priority during the planning and performance of all project activities. Through strong and innovative leadership, this position will strategically manage and implement the departmental policies that ensure the most efficient management of WSDOT to successfully deliver WSDOT projects.
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Project Engineer will:

  • Make recommendations and decisions associated with technical aspects of projects, as well as decisions affecting work force planning, project scheduling, and budgets. 
  • Provide professional oversight and certification of all technical documents prepared by the office engineering staff. 
  • Ensure that contractors and consultants perform work according to the contract requirements and assist in the preparation of agreement supplements. 
  • Manage assigned projects within scope, schedule, and budget and set policy for standard operating procedure within office that are consistent with departmental rules and other directives. 
  • Negotiate agreements with other agencies and organizations
  • Monitor project expenditures and authorize and make monthly payments to contractors, consultants, and vendors. 
  • Control contract change orders  and make decisions on a wide range of project issues within limits of authority.



To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil Engineering
  • Knowledge and experience managing and administering a complex multimillion dollar budget
  • Knowledge of:
    1. Highway design and plan, specification, and estimate preparation
    2. Highway construction and construction practices
    3. Surveying and surveying practices
    4. Transportation issues and problems, transportation design
    5. Environmental laws, regulations, and issues
    6. Programming and budget procedures
    7. Right of way acquisition processes
    8. Limited access and access management laws and guidelines 


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Eight (8) years of experience in delivering design and construction projects. 
  • Experience in procuring projects through the design-build and design-bid-build processes
  • Knowledge of FHWA processes and requirements related to delivering federally funded projects.
