The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced traffic engineer looking to advance their career into a leadership role and serve as our Assistant Region Traffic Engineer – Area Operations for WSDOT’s Northwest Region (NWR). The primary purpose of this position is to guide, manage, and direct professional traffic engineering and operations services within Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, and Island counties. The successful candidate hired into this position will have the authority and responsibility for approving traffic design features and the implementation of operational actions. As the Assistant Region Traffic Engineer, this position is relied upon to lead innovative actions and projects that are sustainable and cost-effective. The Assistant Region Traffic Engineer will play a vital role in WSDOT's successful delivery of WSDOT projects, maintaining public confidence, and ensuring a safe and efficient transportation system.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Region Traffic Engineer will:

  • Lead several traffic engineering/operations teams in innovative analysis, design and operations consistent with national and state standards and guidance. 
  • Lead development and implementation of Safe Transportation Systems and Complete Streets approaches for projects within the Region.
  • Lead and monitor program budget utilized for traffic operations, project development, and project construction. 
  • Lead and coordinate review and/or policy development originating from WSDOT HQ, as well as solely within assigned region. 
  • Facilitate and implement work process improvements, with focus on development/delivery of Practical Solutions. 
  • Facilitate the establishment of intra-agency agreements for implementation and/or operation of traffic control systems; particularly traffic signal systems. 
  • Develop and administer traffic operations related to consultant contracts, including developing scope, tracking schedule and budget, and performance measurement. 
  • Interpret and apply national and state policies and standards for ensuring safe highway design and operations. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering
  • Combination of ten (10) years in traffic design and/or traffic operations, particularly in channelization, signing, multi-modal, active transportation, access management, traffic signal operations. 
  • Three (3) years of experience in transportation safety management, including investigation, analysis, low-cost project development/implementation, and performance measurement. 
  • Ability to develop and administer a complex multimillion dollar budget

 

It is desirable that qualified candidates also have:

  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering specializing in Traffic Engineer, Operations, or Planning
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
