The role:  

Join the Astoria Construction Office as a survey crew leader! In this position you will be responsible for coordinating survey activities on complex projects. You will also direct the work of lower level personnel and train them on survey techniques. Apply today!

This position is located in Area 1 of Region 2 within ODOT, which extends from the Columbia estuary to (approximately) Neskowin along US101, and up the Columbia River to Scappoose. This expansive area allows for a wide variety of transportation projects. Projects such as bridge replacements, roadway preservation, intersection safety improvements and ADA upgrades modernize and increase safety for all residents and people visiting the beautiful Oregon Coast. Stream channel restoration projects provide for improved salmon spawning habitats, improving the viability of our beautiful and natural environment. All ODOT projects are rewarding as they give back to local communities and the many visitors who choose to recreate and spend time among the many natural wonders of the Oregon Coast.

A day in the life:

  • Direct field and construction surveying activities on a crew.

  • Develop base maps, digital terrain models, drainage studies, right of way resolves establish control points and preliminary alignments.

  • Process survey data and use computer analysis and design software on road projects.

  • Maintain surveying equipment and supplies.

  • Monitor project safety procedures and methods.

  • Review and monitor contractor’s schedules for feasibility, accuracy and completeness.

  • Act as a mentor for lower level inspectors and surveyors on crew.

  • Write technical reports and project semi-final narrative.

  • Perform construction inspection of contractor’s performance ensuring plans and specification are adhered to.  

  • Calculate and verify quantities, prepare and submit pay notes as work is performed on projects.

  • May be exposed to extreme hazards, lifting up to 50 pounds, adverse weather conditions, and work occasionally at heights of 20 feet or more.

What we need:

  • Four years of para-professional engineering or surveying experience. One year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group.

OR

  • An associate's degree in engineering technology or surveying from a recognized community college or technical school of engineering and two and one-half years of engineering or surveying experience. One year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group.

 OR

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, surveying, or transportation-related engineering and one year civil engineering or surveying experience.

 OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience providing construction inspection on heavy civil projects.

  • Experience performing thorough roadway, bridge, hydraulic, ADA plans, specifications and quantity reviews.

  • Preference will be given to those with a current ODOT General Construction Inspector Certification.

  • Experience and knowledge related to delivering projects in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and policies.

  • Experience in land surveying.
