The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced traffic engineer to serve as Assistant Area Traffic Engineer overseeing the King County area. This position will provide design guidance and quality assurance for major corridor projects and programs, local agency projects, developer projects, and WSDOT’s lower-cost enhancement program to ensure consistency with all applicable federal, state, and local policies and standards. As the Assistant Area Traffic Engineer, this position will utilize traffic engineering and operations expertise to make an impact on state highway projects and is expected to be an advocate and steward for the integrity of the state highway network through all phases of planning, design, construction, and operations.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant King Area Traffic Engineer will:

  • Oversee a wide range of traffic engineering work on highway projects within King County, directing the work of technical experts, and be directly accountable for decisions, directions, and outcomes. 
  • Routinely apply independent judgement for providing traffic engineering analysis, design and operations decisions, including on the most complex transportation projects in the state. 
  • Interpret and apply state policies and standards to highway planning, safety, operations, and design. 
  • Develop, seek approval, and implement actions that provide the best service possible by incorporating the latest operational, construction, and maintenance considerations. 
  • Review channelization plans for WSDOT projects and other local agencies and developer projects in King County. 
  • Lead traffic analysis using traffic modeling and engineering judgement to develop basic geometric requirements for state highway projects and low-cost operational improvements. 
  • Recommend traffic control devices on King County area highways, including traffic signals, roundabouts, warning signs and devices, ramp meters, and other signs and pavement markings. 
  • Coordinate actions and activities with local transportation, enforcement, transit agencies, and other working groups within WSDOT. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering or similar degree
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering
  • Five (5) years of practical experience in traffic design, traffic operations, freeway operations, construction traffic control, and/or highway safety management
  • One (1) year of experience developing and/or reviewing complex freeway/highway channelization
  • Ability to effectively and professionally represent WSDOT to external customers (e.g. general public and local jurisdictions)

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering
