The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Review Support Engineer to help ensure that evaluation of and improvements to the state system are compliant with standard specifications, contract specifications, and contract plans. In this role, you will manage, coordinate, and perform development reviews, Utility reviews, maintenance work zone reviews, Pre-Design Support, Scoping and Estimating. As the Review Support Engineer, you will support design build oversite and review on major projects. The work performed in this position preserve and improve the safety, quality, and capacity of the State’s transportation system. What to Expect
Expect to work in a dynamic, challenging, and supportive environment with leadership and management dedicated to your success, professional growth, and development.  Field Review work is rare and infrequent. If performed, Field Review is performed outdoors in inclement weather on construction sites in daytime or nighttime. Exposure to hazards may include exhaust, high-speed traffic, steep or uneven terrain, and/or heavy construction equipment.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Review Support Engineer will:

  • Track and review submittals from Development Services, Utility Office, and Maintenance for compliance with WSDOT design documentation; distribute submittals to technical experts as needed.
  • Perform Geometric Review of conceptual designs. 
  • Compile all review comments and return review packages to originator for correction or response.
  • Provide coordination for regionwide work zone traffic control.
  • Provide Design-Build Review and Oversite Support; perform review and oversite of work zone traffic control for design build projects.
  • Provide support for Pre-Design work; support the Planning Office with Traffic design work.
  • Develop plans for traffic signals, illumination, closed circuit television, variable message signing, -channelization plans, signing plans, and write special provisions when needed to support design delivery.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent work such as experience preparing or reviewing traffic signals, Intelligent Transportation Systems, illumination, signing, and work zone traffic control plans and construction contract documents.
  • Currently Certified as a Traffic Control Supervisor or the ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Experience working effectively individually and within a diverse team environment including communicating orally and in writing to multiple audiences.
  • Proven skill to examine, develop, and propose alternate solutions to complex elements of a project and engineering issues.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience in working independently, prioritizing workload, and managing multiple assignments.
  • Experience utilizing traffic modeling software to generate reports.
  • Working skills related to computer applications involving computer aided drafting, roadway modeling, databases, word processing, and spreadsheets.
It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2.
  • Two (2) years of experience preparing traffic signals, Intelligent Transportation Systems, illumination, signing, and work zone traffic control plans and construction contract documents.
  • One (1) year of experience preparing contract plans using Microstation and Inroads.
  • Strong knowledge of WSDOT Design Manual, Traffic Manual, and Work Zone Traffic Control Manual for Maintenance.
 
Important Notes 
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.   
  • This position is not eligible for telework when performing field review duties, but flexible and/or compressed work weeks may be an option based on business needs.
  • The successful candidate will be required to obtain certification as a Traffic Control Supervisor within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Employee may have to travel to an occasional off-site meeting or to attend training. Rare travel to field sites may be required.
