The role:  
Combine your engineering experience and leadership skills on our team as a lead geotechnical engineer! In this position, you will take charge of the geotechnical aspects of project design, construction support, operational response and provide mentoring input and training development for staff. You will work in one of the most geologically complex regions of the state with abundant opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge in operational response with a dynamic team of highway transportation professionals and contractors. A day in the life:
  • Perform geotechnical engineering on projects involving large and complex geotechnical, roadway and structure designs, document recommendations in written geotechnical reports, contract plans and specifications.
  • Work with Engineering Geologists to develop and coordinate exploration programs and materials testing needs.
  • Occasionally work with the public and media.
  • Perform review and geotechnical engineering evaluation of contracts and designs prepared by others, both in-house and outsourced.
  • Provide expert testimony and advice for the state in geotechnical matters.
  • Serve as  the technical expert for the Region 3 Technical Center for  geotechnical engineering matters.
  • Assist with the review and development of technical design standards for geotechnical design and construction specifications.
  • Prioritize and assign tasks effectively and efficiently complete work products.
  • Provide timely construction support including submittal reviews and on-site response to construction challenges.
  • Provide timely on-site guidance for the resolution of urgent and emergency geo-hazard response to landslides, rock falls, and structure foundation scour concerns, frequently during adverse weather events.
  • Work 30% or more of the time in the field during potentially adverse conditions.
  • Occasional night work and overnight travel required.
  • Overtime is frequently required for this position.

What we need:
A valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering and three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.

NOTE: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.

  • Works well in a team oriented environment and builds and maintains collaborative working relationships with all customers.
  • Strong technical writing skills and verbal communication skills..
  • Extensive experience with highway transportation landslide/rockfall remediation, particularly urgency and emergency response.
  • Extensive experience with highway transportation structure foundation design.
  • Oregon Registered Professional Geotechnical Engineers are encouraged to apply.
