Job Description:

Are you interested in working for UDRI, a national leader in scientific and engineering research, serving government, industry and nonprofit customers? UDRI achieved $2.75 billion in cumulative sponsored research in 2020. Sponsored research for 2020 alone exceeded $169 million. Established as the research arm of the University of Dayton in 1956, UDRI is ranked first in the nation among all colleges and universities for sponsored materials research, according to the National Science Foundation. We invite qualified candidates to apply for our Additive Manufacturing Engineer opening!

The position will primarily focus on reverse engineering/design/design/qualification of aerospace components to be manufactured using direct metal laser melting and polymer fused deposition modelling additive manufacturing processes. Focus will be on acquiring the fit, form and function requirements of existing aerospace components and translating this knowledge into the technical data, including construction of 3D CAD models and 2D drawings required to produce the equivalent or superior performing part using an additive manufacturing process. An additive manufacturing product development process is used to guide the design engineer, but it is essential that the engineer be well versed in the fundamentals of mechanical design as well as possess the ability to assess requirements and choose the most economical combination of part geometry, material properties and post processing techniques to take full advantage of the additive manufacturing process. Job duties include defining part functional requirements, material selection, design for additive manufacturing including modelling as built and final part geometry, drawing creation utilizing GD&T principles to communicate process/inspection requirements, post processing manufacturing process flow development, test plan development and execution, test data interpretation to verify qualification and creation of summary test/project reports. The position will also require the ability to resolve design-related manufacturing and performance issues. Candidate must demonstrate ability to communicate well using engineering terminology.

Minimum Qualifications:
R2 level minimum requirement:
3+ years direct engineering/technical design experience including ownership of design concept, CAD (modelling and drawing), qualification and production release of multiple products/projects.
R3 level minimum requirement:
8+ years direct engineering/technical design experience including ownership of design concept, CAD (modelling and drawing), qualification and production release of multiple products/projects.
Combined minimum requirements:
1. BS degree in either mechanical or aerospace engineering.
2. 3+ years of practical experience with Computer Aided Design software, preferably Dassault SolidWorks.
3. 3+ years of practical experience in 2D drawing generation, including application of GD&T.
4. 3+ years experience in qualification of components and transition of technology to a validated manufacturing process.
5. Practical experience in simulation and FEA analysis using an industry standard analysis tool such as ANSYS
6. Practical experience reverse-engineering products/projects.
7. Familiarity with various manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, extrusion, CNC machining, injection molding, thermoforming, etc.
8. Successful collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team.
9. Proficient with MS Office Suite software.
10. Valid driver's license with low risk driving record.
11. Due to the nature of this position, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

1. Experience with additive manufacturing, including print file development.
2. Experience in reverse-engineering or combination of design change/material substitution/process change to enhance performance, reduce cost or increase manufacturing efficiency.
3. Experience with heat treatment techniques and their effects on tailoring material properties to suit part performance requirements
4. Experience with failure analysis, root cause determination and corrective action implementation.
5. MS degree in either mechanical or aerospace engineering
6. Experience generating specifications/procedures/manuals for training purposes.
7. Working knowledge of US Air Force policies and procedures.
8. Experience with design of experiments.
9 Proficient with Dassault SolidWorks modelling and drawing CAD software.
10. Proficient in non-linear FEA analysis
11. Experience with developing and delivering training courses on engineering/design topics
12. Experience with generating/maintaining and improving processes and documents to gain or maintain ISO certification
13. Ability to perform extensive research, catalogue findings during development activities, and write reports for both internal and external use.
14. Demonstrated self-motivation with ability to work with minimal supervision.
15. Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills.
