Job Description:

Borrego is seeking an Estimating Engineer to join our growing Development Engineering team. The Estimating Engineer will support value engineering, and costing of projects for design stages ranging from origination/L1 to 50% engineering drawings and will report to the Director of Development Engineering.

About the Role:

This position develops and quantifies a complete capital expenditure (CapEx) model for evaluating projects by applying technical guidance, estimating knowledge, and market forecasts during the project development process. This position also maintains and creates the suite of tools used by engineers to make estimates for their individual projects.

Day to day responsibilities include reviewing project estimates, developing and maintaining estimating tools, supporting value engineering efforts, and evaluating emerging technologies in the industry. You will have the opportunity to grow your skill set as this team works on a large portfolio of technologies in a variety of markets.

In this role, you will collaborate with cross functional teams involved in project development, finance, and engineering to create project estimate templates that inform regional planning. As part of the estimating team, you will develop strategies employing data analytics and algorithms in order to develop and improve tools to streamline internal processes and workflow.

Technical Estimating Expertise

  • Establish and maintain templates for capital cost estimates
  • Perform costing reviews to ensure the engineering teams get the results they need from our tools
  • Review and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings of distributed and utility scale renewable energy projects
  • Review layouts, designs and specifications for cost effectiveness and suggests alternatives, when appropriate
  • Remain current with technology and industry evolutions, providing guidance for capital estimates to anticipate changing market conditions

Developing and Maintaining Tools

  • Assess existing design and cost modeling tools and establish automation between tools
  • Create standard operating procedures and tools that empower internal stakeholders and enable them to work effectively and efficiently toward developing new projects
  • Set up, maintain, and execute in-house software and prediction tools to support various SMEs

Process Improvement

  • Contribute to the review of market research from industry sources, interpret and share summary memos with relevant engineering teams and loop that information back into standard tools
  • Apply technical and value engineering knowledge in support of new product development
  • Train new engineers on our estimating systems and tools

Cross Departmental Collaboration

  • Coordinate with Project Development and Project Finance teams, ensuring understanding of regional and project objectives and efficient utilization of resources
  • Collaborate with regional leads to understand early stage project developments and anticipated cost risks
  • Learn from internal customers in the office and the field, and manage closed feedback loops to continuously improve our standard product design and deliverables
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field; Master’s Degree preferred
  • 4+ years engineering experience with at least 3 years experience on renewable energy projects and 2 years experience with cost estimating
  • Demonstrated understanding of the market for distributed and utility-scale solar
  • Energy storage and wind estimating experience a plus
  • Familiarity with Lean problem-solving techniques and tools and excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong team leadership skills
  • Comfortable working with a collaborative team in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment
