The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an ambitious and proactive professional to serve as our next Design Project Manager. This position will be responsible for delivering assigned projects within the allocated scope, schedule, and budget while leading and developing direct reports to become effective team members and future leaders at WSDOT. The Design Project Manager will support WSDOT’s mission to provide and support safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality for people and businesses.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Project Manager will:

  • Manage, identify, track, and effectively communicate scope, schedule, and budget risks associated with assigned projects to appropriate leadership. 
  • Coordinate projects with support groups and external customers to clarify scope, set schedule, and aid in their project role. Utilize the available resources to proactively manage daily activities of assigned projects to ensure successful delivery of these projects. 
  • Supervise tasks of direct reports and ensure timely and accurate results by creating short, intermediate, and long-term goals and providing feedback. 
  • Track project expenses, mange project schedule, review direct report and specialty group work, update aging reports, earned value charts, and other related project management activities. 
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent combination of applicable experience in performing roadway design work. 
  • Current driver’s license
  • Ability to proactively and creatively address and solve complex engineering and project management problems to maintain scope, schedule, and budget of assigned projects.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Ability to traverse different terrains during all weather conditions to perform field reviews. 
  • Ability to travel throughout the region and state to various project sites. 
  • Proficient knowledge and skill application of standard project management practices. 
  • Proficient organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead, supervise, and coach direct reporting staff to maximize performance in their current roles and to prepare them for future opportunities. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, or a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering in a closely related field. 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Washington or the ability to obtain Washington State concurrency if licensed out of state. 
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT), Engineer Intern (EI), Intern Engineer (IE) certification or verification of a passing mark on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. 
  • Three (3) years as a Transportation Engineer 2 or an equivalent combination of applicable experience of increasing responsibilities in performing roadway design work. 
  • Experience with scheduling software including, but not limited to, Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.
  • Experience with Microstation, In-Roads, and/or Open Roads CAD software.
  • Experience with WSDOT preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates.
