The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire multiple self-motivated professionals to support our construction projects in Everett as Assistant Inspector/Materials Tester. This In-Training position will support these programs by assisting the project inspectors, testing and sampling construction materials used on WSDOT projects. As the Assistant Inspector, this position will support the project inspector to ensure that the project is being built according to the Standard Specifications and Contract documents. As the Material Tester, the incumbent will ensure accurate testing and sampling using testing equipment and established procedures. This position is vital to ensuring that testing, sampling, and documentation of construction materials is accomplished efficiently and accurately while aligning with applicable rules and policies.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Materials Tester will:

  • Inspect a variety of highway construction projects to ensure work is done in conformance with contract plans, special provisions, standard specifications, permits and regulations. 
  • Prepare accurate, legible inspectors daily reports by observing and documenting the contractor’s daily activities. 
  • Prepare accurate and complete field note records and calculations supporting payment of inspected contract items. 
  • Assist in coordinating daily work activities with other field inspectors, survey crews, and others involved in the project. 
  • Perform a variety of job-site tests, records test data, and interpret test results. 
  • Serve as a materials inspector at an asphalt or concrete plant by observing batching operations, performing materials tests, collecting samples, checking plant equipment and procedures, and completing paperwork. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 2 level, the following are required:

  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying, Drafting, or other closely related fields, OR
  • Completion of an accredited vocational/technical program consisting of at least 1,200 instructional hours in Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying, Drafting, Structural Detailing, Engineering Design, or other closely related field, OR
  • Two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent. 

 

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Technician 3 level, the following are required:

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent semi-skilled technical engineering work experience, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, OR
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, OR
  • Land Surveyor’s license

 

In addition, Candidates at either level will have:

  • Current unrestricted driver’s license
  • ACI Concrete Tester Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months.
  • Ability to read and understand contract documents such as special provisions, contract plans, and standard specifications. 
  • Ability to travel throughout the region to visit project sites and work nights, weekends, and/or extended shifts beyond standard business hours.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and lift and transport up to 50lbs of material and equipment. 
  • Ability to work night work shifts as needed for extended periods of time

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) or WA State Flagger
  • Qualified Tester with extensive experience in concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and compaction. 

 

Important Notes 

  • In additional to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
  • By issuance of proclamation, the Governor of Washington State mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This position allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Technician field and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Technician 3. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Technician 2 or Transportation Technician 3, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:
    1. Transportation Technician 2: $48,996 - $65,928
    2. Transportation Technician 3: $55,524 - $74,604
