About WSDOT
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 
 
The Opportunity
WSDOT has an immediate need for Deputy Director.  This position is responsible for carrying out the coordination of planning, design oversight, construction oversight, and operations to influence and create a multimodal system that moves people where they need to go.    
 
This is a leadership role with four positions that reporting directly.  This division consists of three major lines of service, which are the bus, light rail, and sounder train.  This role would require coordination between transit agencies, WSDOT, local jurisdictions, and the public. We are looking for someone that is able to develop streamlined processes and apply "practical solutions" to enhance the regional transit system.
 
What to Expect
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Deputy Director will:

  • Provide strategic guidance to staff by leading and participating team meetings
  • Responsible for staff development support and management
  • Assist with the development and management of WSDOT's delivery within the Regional Transit Division, achieving this by coordinating with our partners
  • Manage reviews and approvals for projects that range in size from $100 million to 4 billion and the WSDOT staff associated with these projects
  • Facilitate and give presentations to WSDOT Leadership and external organizations
  • Participate in various policy-advisory groups regarding multimodal transportation and infrastructure planning
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Project Management, engineering, planning, public administration, or a related field or equivalent experience
  • At least 10 years' experience leading increasingly sophisticated organizations or programs, at least two of these years must be either in public transportation planning, design, construction, or operations fields
  • At least 5 of those years in project management planning and design, experience in risk assessment methodologies, and personnel leadership

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: 
  • Advanced degree or appropriate experience in a related field

  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional general wage increase of 3.25% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2022.
  • By issuance of proclamation, the Governor of Washington State mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
