The Opportunity

The Department of Civil Engineering, one of the five Departments at the Faculty of Engineering, is looking to appoint an outstanding academic to join our high-performing team. This will be a key leadership role in the Faculty’s research performance, income generation and industry engagement agenda ensuring the continual growth and diversification of the Department. As Professor and Head of Department you will play a key part in shaping the future of the Department of Civil Engineering, providing strong and effective leadership for the expansion of the Faculty’s research strategy and PhD program.

The Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering is a key leadership role within the Faculty’s executive group and contributes to the development of the Faculty’s strategic plan. The Department of Civil Engineering is recognised worldwide for the quality of its research and teaching in many fields of civil engineering, including: sustainable infrastructure, model-data fusion, water sensitive urban design, smart structures and construction. The Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering will play a pivotal role in providing strong and committed leadership that will inspire staff with a strong vision for education, research, and engagement.

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, the Professor and Head of Department, Civil Engineering is responsible for the overall operational management of the academic staff cohort, and will provide strategic leadership in academic governance and supervision, staffing and resource planning, and implementation of strategy to achieve the Faculty’s research agenda. This position will take responsibility for staff leadership and management and the strengthening of an inclusive and collegiate environment.  

The Head of Department will be held initially for five (5) years, and may be extended for an additional term by mutual agreement. The Head of Department position will be underpinned by a continuing appointment as Professor.

To succeed in this role

As Professor and Head of Department you will have an outstanding research and teaching record, and a proven capacity for leadership at a senior management level that includes developing and leading strategy, financial management and the management of staff to achieve excellence in education, research and engagement. You will provide academic leadership and have highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to shape a collaborative and collegiate culture.

To be considered for this role, you will have demonstrated experience in establishing a strong collegial program of research capable of attracting substantial external funding. You will have demonstrated international leadership in the discipline of civil engineering, with a reputation for being an expert in the field and delivering top-tier research that has a beneficial impact on society. You will demonstrate innovative and inspiring scholarship including supervision of PhD students to high-quality outcomes.

With a flexible attitude and responsiveness to diverse staff needs, you will be able to consult and liaise confidently with senior-level stakeholders. You will have demonstrable experience liaising with external bodies, both national and international, for the benefit of the discipline. Your managerial skills will ensure compliance with policy and accreditation needs, and your financial literacy will ensure the competent management of the Department’s budget. As a strong inclusive leader who is receptive to feedback, you will strive towards excellence at all times and continue to maintain our positive culture and morale. Your passion for the role will support the Faculty and Department in promoting positive change and process improvement and will likewise inspire staff.
