Job Description:

Scientific Engineering Associate - 95094

Organization: AL-Advanced Light Source

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Advanced Light Source (ALS, https://als.lbl.gov/) Division has openings for Scientific Engineering Associates (SEA) to join the team.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our team!

In this position, you will work within the Photon Science Development (PSD) group, which is responsible for developing and maintaining cutting-edge experimental systems across a broad range of applications. The role requires a skilled and flexible candidate capable of operating in a dynamic R&D environment. The ideal candidate will possess a subset of the skills detailed below, and be willing to learn from others. We are open to hiring at multiple job classification levels, and we encourage candidates of varied levels of experience to apply. We particularly seek candidates with a potential for growth.

The core values of the ALS reflect a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek candidates who will support a culture in which the entire community feels welcomed and valued. An ongoing commitment to recruiting and retaining a vibrant, diverse, and talented workforce is paramount to promoting a strong and successful lab community.

What You Will Do:

• In collaboration with scientists, engineers, and mechanical/electrical technicians, contribute to the support of scientific research at LBNL through maintaining, developing, and upgrading experimental systems. This will entail:

• Troubleshooting and documenting issues on equipment and systems, and developing and implementing solutions.

• Engaging in the design and implementation of scientific and optical instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and computer control systems (such as automation). This will include system design, implementation, commissioning, and documentation.

• Documenting the results of projects and disseminating information to colleagues.

• Through on-the-job experience and independent initiative, build knowledge and expand your skill set to encompass a number of cross-disciplinary areas commensurate with your interests and aligned with institutional scientific/technical goals. You will interact with technicians, engineers, and scientists in our experimental research environment. Development opportunities are varied and may include exposure to mechanical design, electrical design, control engineering, fabrication, safety, or project management in application areas including optics, metrology, physics, material science, physical chemistry, biological systems, and others.

What is Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in a physical science or engineering or equivalent experience in a related field.

• Ability to work independently (with minimal supervision) in a multidisciplinary, diverse, scientific research environment, collaborating with a variety of scientific, engineering, technical, and administrative staff at many levels.

• Hands-on experience in building/assembling equipment.

• Demonstrated ability to proactively develop and implement solutions to a variety of technical problems.

• Ability to learn new skills and techniques as required by the situation.

• Knowledge and experience in designing, operating, and/or maintaining instrumentation in multiple types of systems. This can include mechanical, electrical, vacuum, data acquisition, test and measurement, or computer-controlled systems.
