WisDOT is seeking a DOT Engineering Chief to manage the Materials Management Section within the Bureau of Technical Services . This full time permanent Career Executive position is headquartered in Madison, WI.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for management of the Materials Management Section within the Bureau of Technical Services.  The Materials Management Section Chief supervises the Concrete Materials Laboratory Unit, the Quality Assurance Unit the Pavement Unit, the Geotechnical Engineering Unit, the HMA Unit and the Subsurface Exploration Unit.

The Materials Management Section Chief performs highly responsible engineering, administrative and managerial work involving the development, implementation and evaluation of important programs, policies, budget initiatives and organizational changes affecting the Department’s transportation engineering programs.  The incumbent is required to coordinate activities and communicate effectively with numerous and diverse constituencies, including the legislature, the public, local units of government, contractors and industry representatives, the media, other state agencies, other WisDOT managers and FHWA. These program interrelationships are extremely diverse and complex.  The effective management of these relationships requires a thorough understanding of technical engineering issues and communications strategies.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (81-02) with an annual salary of $87,360-$99,632, plus excellent benefits. A 2 year career executive trial period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

This position will require occasional travel, throughout the state of Wisconsin, including some overnight stays.

WisDOT does not sponsor work visas.  Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

Certain positions within this Department may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process. For positions that do allow remote work flexibility, although residency in the State of WI is not required for permanent positions, it is not anticipated that working outside of WI or bordering cities will be allowed as positions may at times need to report to office locations in WI on short notice.

All state employees are required to report their COVID vaccination status, whether vaccinated or not, and must provide supporting documentation if vaccinated. Newly hired employees will be required to submit this information within their first two weeks of employment.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement - possession of a current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), must have WI PE within 3 months of hire if current registration is from another state

In addition to the minimum requirement, qualified candidates will also have experience in all of the following:

  • Experience working with transportation engineering principles, practices, programs, budgets, and project management
    • Duties may include: design, construction, planning development, operation, and/or maintenance of transportation or similar systems
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse group of stakeholders including external and internal parties (stakeholders may include a division, bureau, partner agency, the public, media, etc.)
  • Experience leading a team of professional staff in formal or informal capacity
    • Experience may include formal supervisory role or lead a project team on a large scale. 
    • Activities may include coaching, mentoring, reviewing/analyzing work, assigning workloads, directing work, assessing employee performance, motivating staff/team.
