About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 

 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced engineer to serve as Project Manager to direct activities that are necessary for the development of transportation safety, preservation, and improvement projects for WSDOT’s Northwest Region (NWR). As the Project Manager, the primary undertaking of this position is to deliver the assigned Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build projects within scope, schedule, and budget while developing the direct reports to become future leaders of WSDOT. The successful candidate appointed to the Project Manager position will have a high impact to WSDOT’s mission to provide and support safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve livable communities and economic vitality for people and businesses.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Project Manager will:

  • Utilize available resources to manage the daily activities of assigned projects to ensure successful delivery and ensure deliverables meet current standards and guidelines. 
  • Prepare and update project management plans, project schedules, design documentation files, environmental documentation, right of way plans, earned value charts, and other related project management activities. 
  • Set up and monitor project schedule to ensure that project milestone dates are met.
  • Monitor and manage Consultant and WSDOT expenditures, preliminary engineering funding, including providing funds aging. 
  • Supervise and coach direct reports to maximize performance within their current roles and to prepare them for future roles. 
  • Develop and deliver project related presentation to local service and business groups. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Current driver’s license
  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent highway project design experience 
  • Understanding of engineering principles. 
  • Proficient knowledge and skillful application of project management practices. 
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in a timely manner, with professional tone and delivery when interacting with consultants, local government and agency officials, and constituents. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite. 
  • Ability to travel to various locations throughout the state. 
  • Ability to traverse different terrain during all weather conditions to perform field reviews. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification
  • Professional Engineers License in Civil Engineering
  • Three (3) years of increasing responsibilities in performing roadway design work. 
  • Proficiency with Microstation for design, preparation of plans, and estimating. 
  • Proficiency with InRoads for 2D and 3D design
  • Project Management experience utilizing P6
