Organization: GO-Energy Geosciences

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Engineering Division has an opening for a Mechanical Cryogenics Engineer to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will manage and contribute to specific scientific and engineering programs/projects. The Engineering Division is a matrix organization that supports a variety of projects and programs for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

You will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. This position will focus primarily on cryogenic application of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and structural engineering to develop leading solutions to scientific and experimental requirements.

What You Will Do:

• Coordinate and actively participate in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, designers and technicians for all aspects of a complex project to satisfy the cryogenic, mechanical, vacuum, electrical, controls, instrumentation and safety requirements.

• Provide thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and process analysis and the development of design and test verification activities on both system and component levels.

• Provide detailed design, analysis, requirements management, specifications development, procurement/fabrication, installation and commissioning, cost and schedule planning of cryogenic systems and cryogenic equipment.

• Prepare design and analysis reports, and part/assembly drawings for project review.

• Serve as a resource for subordinates and peers; effectively provide team leadership, as appropriate, and make innovative contributions to laboratory needs.

What is Required:

• M.Sc. or B.Sc. with equivalent experience in engineering or related fields.

• Minimum of 5 years of significant cryogenic experience applying engineering principles in solving complex problems within thermal/fluid systems.

• Demonstrated experience working with one or more of the followings: liquid helium systems/cryostats (4K or below 4K), helium recovery and purification system, liquid nitrogen systems, cryocooler-based systems/cryostats (4K or below 4K), and cryocoolers.

• Demonstrated experience planning, organizing and conducting technical projects/programs and formulating cost and schedule data.

• Proficient use of analysis tools to solve complex problems including Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

• Strong communication and presentation skills and publication record in conveying important engineering aspects of project and design and key results.

Desired Qualifications:

• Proficient in Software tools: ANSYS APDL, ANSYS Workbench, PTC Creo or Solidworks, MathCAD, Matlab, CFX, MS Project, etc.

• Experience with design and implementation of experiments using alternative cryogens such as Argon, coolants and water.

• Experience working with Pressure Vessel Coding requirements.

• Experience working with Cryogenic safety analysis.

• Experience with thermal insulation design, heat exchanger design, and cool down process analysis.

• Solid understanding of fabrication methods and technologies.

Notes:

• This is a full time, 2 years, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
