The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire multiple engineers to serve as Assistant Project Inspector. These in-training positions offer a career path and on-the-job training that allow the successful candidate to progress upward through the Transportation Engineer field. As the Assistant Project Inspector, the primary undertaking of these positions will be to inspect and document compliance with contract plans and specifications. The successful candidate will identify problems and challenges and provide input on solutions. These positions will play a vital role in supporting WSDOT’s mission by ensuring that construction contracts are constructed in accordance with contract documents. 
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Project Inspector will:

  • Inspect assigned contract work on construction projects. 
  • Assure compliance with contract plans, provisions, and environmental permits. 
  • Monitor quantities used compared to proposed plan quantities to monitor and report on budget impacts. 
  • Prepare inspector daily reports, field note records, record of force account worked and record of protested work for monthly pay estimates. 
  • Manage environmental best management practices to ensure permit requirements are met and to ensure that construction work is covered under permits. 
  • Coordinate materials testing with the Materials Engineer and materials inspection team members.
  • Work when the contractor works, which often means night hours for extended periods of time

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 1 level, the following are required:

  • Associate’s degree and Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3 and Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and Engineer in Training (EIT) certification

 

To be considered for this opportunity at the Transportation Engineer 2 level, the following are required:

  • Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering or related field, OR
  • Associates degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Technician 3, OR
  • Associates degree and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and EIT certification, OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Technician 3, OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 and EIT certification. 

 

Candidates at either level will have:

  • Current’ driver’s license
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain in various weather conditions, working around construction equipment next to high-volume traffic. 
  • Ability to work around various chemicals in testing of concrete, asphalt, and earthwork. 
  • Ability to walk, crawl, stand, stoop, bend, climb, and maintain bodily balance while on an incomplete structure or on a ground surface. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, and pull and push up to 50lbs. 
  • Ability to work all scheduled shifts and overtime when necessary, including nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • Ability to understand and solve math problems utilizing clear and concise mathematical formulas. 
  • Strong computer skills and including importing photos, compiling reports, and on-line databases. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Qualified WAQTC Tester
  • EIT Certification

  • This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Engineer field and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Engineer1 or Transportation Engineer 2, depending on their qualifications. Annual salary levels for each position are:
    1. Transportation Engineer 1: $55,524 - $74,604
    2. Transportation Engineer 2: $61,224 - $82,344
