The role:  
 
Apply today to join the Engineering & Technical Services Branch as a senior preservation engineer! You will plan and direct the design of complex bridge rehabilitations, mentor professional designers and technicians in preservation methodologies and prepare consultant contracts for bridge preservation services. In this role, you will make daily engineering decisions relating to structural integrity, public safety and economics to maintain and preserve bridges and transportation structures.

A day in the life:
  • Perform bridge engineering design for simple and complex bridges and other transportation related structures.
  • Prepare bridge design work orders.
  • Manage the bridge design team for multi-bridge projects, and direct and review the work of several structural designers and drafters in the preparation of plans.
  • Serve as the engineer of record for unlicensed structural designers, give project direction and stamp plan sheets for the unlicensed structural designers being mentored.
  • Manage and administer design and research contracts.
  • Provide technical expertise in the design of preservation type projects including bridges and other transportation related structures.
  • Assist the manager with leadership duties.
  • Perform as the bridge quality reviewer.
  • Provide engineering support to resident engineers (construction project managers).
  • Work is typically performed in an office environment and may require working adjacent to fast moving traffic, moving about hazardous locations and working 20 feet or more above the ground. Remote work options available!
  • Occasionally work is in response to damaged bridges or structures and can occur outside of normal business hours.

What we need:
Three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience and a valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural or transportation-related engineering.
 
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Extensive experience designing preservation, repair and maintenance type bridge projects.
  • Familiarity with other transportation disciplines.
  • Experience load rating and strengthening simple to complex bridges.
  • Familiarity with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test methods, ODOT specifications and National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) and Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) standards.
  • Experience mentoring others.
  • Effective communication skills, verbally and written.
