About WSDOT

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 

 

The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire multiple engineers to serve as Office Engineer. The successful candidates appointed to the Office Engineer position will help ensure that projects assigned to this office will be built within scope, schedule and budget. As the Office Engineer, these positions will ensure that materials incorporated in the project are tested properly, and the contractors will receive fair compensation for their efforts. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Office Engineer will:

  • Prepare monthly contract payments and interim or supplemental contractor payments, ensuring that all payments are supported by the appropriate documentation as required. 
  • Ensure monthly progress payments are made timely and all State and Federal wage determination guidelines have been followed and documented. 
  • Coordinate the development of change orders with the Project Engineer, Chief Inspector, design staff, and other support groups.
  • Track, review, and monitor submittals in relation to project schedules and contractual requirements. 
  • Ensure contract compliance in training, apprenticeship, certified payrolls, request for sublets, wage rates and condition of award DBE documentation. 
  • Document pre-construction meetings and circulating meeting minutes, as appropriate. 
  • Provide regular updates to aging and tracking of contract funds, project estimates at completion, pending risks, change order costs and resource loading. 
  • Prepare weekly status reports for each project under construction and those that are physically complete until contract closure.  

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent experience in construction administration

 

In addition to:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods relative to the documentation and construction of transportation projects
  • Ability to propose alternate solutions to complex elements of a project, coordinating with a various department in WSDOT, Contractors, Consultants, or within other agencies. 
  • Fluency in the use of computer applications including Primavera P6, Contract Manager, CCIS, SharePoint, and Microsoft Office
  • Strong mathematical skills to solve engineering problems of varying complexity. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate
  • One (1) year of experience in directing work of a technical engineering staff. 
  • One (1) year of experience in roadway related contract administration
  • One (1) year of Design-Build experience on complex engineering projects. 
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience 
  • Knowledge of the construction documentation process within the WSDOT.
