Role Summary/Purpose

This role will directly report to the Surface Pumping Systems Group Leader. This role supports the Surface Pumping Units segment of Lufkin Industries. He/she will support the product line by utilizing sound mechanical design methodologies, provide product line PLM maintenance, and provide accurate detail drawing definition.

Essential Responsibilities

In this role, the Designer will interface regularly with Project Engineers and the Project Leader to develop solid models, drawings, and robust engineering PLM documentation. Focus on cost-effective designs and manufacturing methodologies will play an important role in the work scope.

In addition, you will:

  • Advance engineering concepts and basic technical requirements into functional product definition designs
  • Create definitions of parts, modules, and assemblies in the form of 2D cross sections, 3D models, tolerance stack-ups, and various electronic data formats to support analysis, manufacturing, assembly, tooling, and inspection
  • Create CAD models in a linked model environment, as well as check, validate, and issue associated drawings
  • Analyze specifications, and organize development of the work order (e.g., BoM construction and maintenance, calculating speeds, lengths, material strength, and weld sizes, selecting materials, composing specification data sheets, preparing blueprint mark-ups, etc.)
  • Determine dimensional constraints and geometric tolerances required for proper clearances and fits while maximizing manufacturing capabilities
  • Work within the guidelines of applicable Company Policies and Procedures, Engineering Standards, Product Definition Operating Procedures, Specifications, Government and Commercial Standards
  • Periodically evaluating and updating existing or generating new engineering standards and product definition operating procedure
  • Interface with draftsmen, engineers, suppliers and shop personnel to make any necessary adjustments or changes to ensure the accuracy and workability of the designs
  • Ensure all interface characteristics between components are established
  • Concurrently manage multiple projects monitoring progress and quality and ensure schedule requirements are met
  • Utilize historical Engineering records to support Sales/Service/Sourcing with customer requirements and questions.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Designing, Technology, or Engineering
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an Engineering, Scientific, or related Technical position

  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) experience i.e. Creo III (Pro-Engineer) or other 3-D Modeling Experience
  • Ability to manage electronic data files in a structured PLM database environment
  • Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerance as it relates to individual parts and overall assemblies
  • Demonstrated proficiency to work with fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
  • Proven ability to calculate figures, such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Experience with some or all of the following: casting design, structural component design, weldments, machined component design, gear design
  • Web based knowledge, word processing, and electronic spreadsheet / presentation skills
  • Ability to perform in a team environment, work cross functionally with all departments, vendors, and with suppliers
  • Proven ability to communicate at all levels of the organization
