Job Description:

The Structural Materials (SM) Division of the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and highly talented engineer to perform research in the area of composite materials and manufacturing. This position will conduct cutting edge research in the development and testing of new polymer and ceramic matrix composites, as well as help to determine cost-effective manufacturing solutions with these materials. High temperature carbon/carbon material development and processing will also be a key element of this position. The engineer will be expected to provide input during part design to aid in material selection and design-for-manufacturing considerations. Additional attributes sought include strong interpersonal and communication skills, detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks, able to prioritize workloads, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment with minimal supervision.
The engineer will also be tasked with operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, building testing apparatuses, preparing reports and presentations, and purchasing required materials, equipment, and supplies. Additionally, the engineer will help build UDRI business through proposal writing and selling growing capabilities to prospective customers.


Minimum Qualifications

R1 Minimum Qualifications:
• BS in science or engineering from a nationally-accredited university.
• Experience with composite materials, design, and manufacturing in either polymer or ceramic matrices.
• Experience with “hands-on” and moderately physical work in a laboratory or shop environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
• Experience working well with others in a collaborative environment and ability to motivate fellow team members.
• Experience with critical thinking and ability to drive a project to completion with little or no supervision.
• Experience properly documenting technical data generated by work projects.
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen. Permanent residents (green card holders) are not eligible for this position.
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Products.

R2 Minimum Qualifications:
• BS in science or engineering from a nationally-accredited university with a minimum of 3 years of directly related experience.
• Demonstrated experience with composite materials, design, and manufacturing in either polymer or ceramic matrices.
• Demonstrated experience with “hands-on” and moderately physical work in a laboratory or shop environment.
• Demonstrated experience with critical thinking and ability to drive a project to completion with little or no supervision.


Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

• Demonstrated project leadership experience.
• Composite experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated experience documenting technical work in reports and presentations.
• Proficiency in CAD, FEA, math software, and/or computer programming.
