The Opportunity
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking an experienced engineering professional with exceptional leadership skills to serve as the Assistant Project Engineer in one of the Project Offices on the I-405/SR 167 Program. The I-405/SR 167 corridor is a multimodal transportation network that extends 40+ miles within three counties in the Puget Sound region.  By joining this team, you would benefit from being part of a fully co-located, blended team with strong career growth opportunities as the I-405/SR 167 Program and its partners work to deliver $2.5 billion in funded projects on I-405/SR 167 corridor.

 
What to Expect
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Project Engineer will:

  • Be responsible for certifying WSDOT design documents, plans, and specifications meet WSDOT standards. 
  • Strategically plan the budget, schedule, and workforce necessary to deliver projects. Manage an office of professional and technical engineers made up of interns, temporary employees, and engineering consultants. 
  •  Manage preliminary engineering design contracts and ensure that all assigned projects are managed in accordance with WSDOT policy and delivered in an environmentally responsible manner consistent with applicable laws.
  • Partner with outside groups and internal departments to communicate provisions of the project development process and requirements of the construction contracts. 
  • Manage design-build and bid-build construction contracts by interpreting and implementing contract documents, regulatory codes and standards, providing information, ensuring all documentation is submitted, monitoring contactor’s progress, and making progress payments. 
 
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering or minimum six (6) years of experience delivering design and construction projects. 
  • Hold a Professional Engineering (PE) License as Civil Engineer in the State of Washington, or out of state PE license holders will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license within three (3) months of employment. 
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Knowledge of highway design, bridge design, and construction processes.
  • Knowledge of managing project delivery techniques, principles of management, quality principles and tools, ability to solve problems, contract administration policy, and construction contract law.
  • Experience supervising and leading staff. 
  • Strong background in both design and construction.

  • The salary listed for this position includes a legislative approved 5% premium for workers in King County.
