About WSDOT
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. 
 
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two innovative and talented individuals to fill Transportation Engineer 2 vacancies located in Lacey, WA. These positions will serve as Design Engineers responsible for the review and/or design of all aspects of project design including Fish Passage, roadway, stormwater, earthwork, cost estimating, design documentation and preparation of plans, specifications and engineers estimates (PS&E). Design Engineers are also responsible for assigning and reviewing work done by consultants. The work of these positions support WSDOT’s mission by ensuring the highway construction and fish passage projects are designed, in compliance standards and specifications. Our top candidates must be detail-oriented and possess outstanding technical skills. 
 
What to Expect
These positions will occasionally perform field visits to project sites. Field visits require the use of appropriate PPE (vests, hard hats, eye, and hearing protection, etc). Hazards will vary from site to site and may include uneven/steep terrain and adjacent high-speed traffic.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Design Engineers will:
  • Provide engineering oversight and review for WSDOT projects designed by consultants including administration of the consultant agreements.
  • Prepare and review design, documentation, contract plans, specifications, and cost estimates for geometric and stormwater design.
  • Use engineering design tools including MicroStation and InRoads to develop roadway geometric elements that meet WSDOT Design Manual standards.
  • Write design documents as required in the Design Manual, including but not limited to technical memos, Access Revision Report, and Design Analysis.
  • Analyze projects to determine applicable stormwater requirements. 
  • Design conveyance systems, stormwater treatment and flow control Best Management Practices (BMPs). 
  • Develop conceptual plans, write technical requirements, and compile contract appendices for design-build request for proposal documents.
  • Develop or review agreements, task orders, contract plans, specifications, and estimates. 
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, at least one of the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent experience as an entry-level Civil Engineer. OR
  • Certification as an Engineer?in?Training and one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1, or equivalent experience as an entry-level Civil Engineer. OR
  • A Master’s degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field.
 
In addition to one of the above, the following are also required
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, methods and practices and the ability to apply them to the assigned projects to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
  • Experience communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Proven skills to examine, develop, and propose alternate solutions to complex elements of a project.
  • Experience in reviewing engineering plans and specifications for compliance with established standards.
  • Experience in being able to effectively work both individually and within a diverse team environment.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience in working independently and prioritize workload and handle multiple assignments.
  • A valid driver’s license. 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Knowledge of WSDOT policies and practices.
  • Experience using the WSDOT Design Manual, Plans Prep Manual, and Standard Specifications.
  • Experience using Microstation, InRoads, and/or Ebase.
  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training.
  • Professional Engineer License in Washington State.
