Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking a highly skilled Assistant Bituminous Materials Engineer for the State Materials Laboratory in Tumwater, WA. The Bituminous Materials Section is part of the State Materials Laboratory which provides testing, technical support and technology development for bituminous materials used by all Regions in the statewide construction program. The Assistant Bituminous Materials Engineer helps supervise and manage the Bituminous Materials Section which includes the Bituminous Mixtures Laboratory, Liquid Asphalt Laboratory and Nuclear Electronics Laboratory and the supervision of two permanent Transportation Engineer 3, two permanent Transportation Engineer 2, two permanent Transportation Technicians and temporary employees as needed for workload. This position is a specialized resource on bituminous material requirements, materials testing, materials quality requirements and provides recommendations for improving, modifying, and enhancing bituminous material specifications and test methods used in the State Highway Construction Program. The Assistant Bituminous Materials Engineer helps manage and maintain the testing equipment assigned to the Bituminous Mixtures, Liquid Asphalt and Nuclear Electronics Laboratories. This includes assisting with maintaining a current equipment inventory, depreciation schedules, equipment purchases (CAP and Non-CAP), equipment surplus, and scheduling needed repairs and maintenance for the section. The Assistant Bituminous Materials Engineer position is responsible for providing expertise in the testing and acceptance of bituminous materials, products and ensuring that WSDOT is utilizing current standards in specifications and construction. The Assistant Bituminous Materials Engineer position provides knowledge on bituminous materials to WSDOT Project Engineer Offices, WSDOT Headquarters Office, WSDOT Regions and local agencies. The Assistant Bituminous Materials Engineer aids with managing the Bituminous Materials Section budget.
