Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced engineer to serve as Lead Design Engineer supporting the Puget Sound Gateway Program’s SR-509 Completion project. This position will provide design engineering support and management under limited supervision. As the Lead Design Engineer, this position will assist the conceptual design development, permitting, manage procurement documents, and coordinating the development of procurement documents for design-build projects. The Lead Design Engineer will play a vital role in WSDOT's successful delivery of the Puget Sound Gateway Program’s SR-509 Completion project, maintaining public confidence and helping the public travel safely.


What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Lead Design Engineer will:

  • Perform direct supervision of a team of engineers and technicians, mentoring and training on technical engineering skills, policies and procedures. 
  • Review project design schedule and monitor task delivery schedule and progress to provide feedback to supervisors on critical path deliverables. 
  • Coordinate work on various elements of design-build procurement documents into the final procurement product. 
  • Work with technical leads and section authors to compile sections in accordance with the development schedule, process, and procedures. 
  • Verify all appendices identified in the technical requirements are complete, tracking design team components in support of the procurement manager. 
  • Coordinate with support groups to ensure plans and specifications are accurate and consistent with other design elements. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent experience such as a Bridge Engineer 2 or Transportation Planning Specialist 2
  • Knowledge and experience with the preparation of design and construction schedules. 
  • Knowledge and experience in managing the development of the Request for Proposal (RFP) documentation. 
  • Knowledge and experience in the preparation and collection of data for environmental documentation and permits. 
  • Knowledge and experience in the preparation of contract plans and special provisions for design-bid-build and design-build projects. 
  • Knowledge and experience in managing the development of technical reports and appendices for RFP documentation. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering related field
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification
  • Experience with the project development policy and processes as described in the Design Build Manual
