The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Design Documentation Engineer in Spokane to be the region expert in transportation design providing guidance/support to various engineering offices in preparation of roadway designs and required design documentation. In this role, you will support project delivery within the Eastern Region, reviewing and ensuring that designs are complete, accurate, consistent, and in conformance with WSDOT policies. We are looking for individuals with attention to detail and full understanding of engineering practices and principles.

 

What to Expect

This position services as the primary design reviewer for the Eastern Region Development Branch. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, as a Transportation Engineer 3, you will:

  • Review project designs and design documentation for all stages of the design process, kickoff meetings through advertisement. 
  • Perform design work including review of Eastern Region, local agency, and developer project designs and documentation.
  • Recommend approval of, or changes to, designs and design documentation. 
  • Track design status of Region projects and participate in weekly PS&E status meetings communicating design issues that need to be resolved. 
  • Supervise and lead staff in design review.
  • Ensure the accuracy of final estimates for funding requests and compilation of final PS&E packages for HQ Advertisement.  
  • Coordinate and prepare addenda for projects during advertisement. 
  • Coordinate region advertisement and award of emergency and small works projects.
  • Serve as the initial contact for design questions from Project Engineering Offices and others; including ADA questions, initial review of ADA Maximum Extent Feasible submittals, and guardrail/barrier options.
  • Research emerging issues or unfamiliar topics to be able to provide guidance when needed.

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One year experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent. 
  • Two or four year degree in engineering or related field.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • The ability to read, understand, and apply technical manuals and reports. 
  • The ability to produce and/or review a variety of engineering calculations, plans, and reports. 
  • Communicate effectively with both internal and external customers verbally and in writing. 
  • Supervise employees in accordance with WSDOT policies.
  • Lead, support, train, and prepare staff in a variety of tasks. 
  • Investigate and solve technical engineering problems. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Three years of experience in Design/PS&E Development and design documentation. 
  • Knowledge of WSDOT Design Manual and other design requirements.
