The University of Pittsburgh's Information Technology (Pitt IT) department is seeking a qualified Data Storage Systems Engineer for the Operations division. This is an advanced technical position able to deliver on the goal of a modern storage infrastructure by applying expert unstructured data management principles for enterprise and research storage systems to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and meet the long-term data storage needs for the University. Data Storage Systems Engineer is responsible for engaging with and understanding customer's needs and requirements for data storage to be able to guide, design, develop, manage, and execute on data policies leveraging data management solutions and automation scripts. The Data Storage Systems Engineer will facilitate the movement, migration, tagging, and replication of unstructured data across on-premises and cloud storage systems. The Data Storage Systems Engineer will work independently as well as in a lead a capacity to communicate, collaborate and work closely with co-workers, stakeholders, and customers to effectively and efficiently manage unstructured data across these storage systems. The incumbent must have a high level of expertise in on-premises and cloud storage systems, file systems, and network file sharing protocols to be able to make decisions and recommendations to identify and classify data to determine the ideal storage tier and location. The incumbent will also report on the capacity of our storage systems and make recommendations to expand these systems proactively in anticipation of the University needs.Expert knowledge of storage systems, cloud technologies, and strong problem solving, organizing information, and communication skills are required. An incumbent must also demonstrate and have years of prior experience in:File, block, and object storage systems running on-premises and in the cloud.Ability to setup and configure automated data tiering policies (e.g., mission critical, hot, cold, archive) leveraging integrated storage system specific and unified storage system technologies.Managing data using different file sharing (i.e, NFS, SMB) and transfer protocols (i.e, FTP, FTPS).Managing data using on enterprise and research file systems including parallel, HPC, Windows-based, and Linux based. Azure and AWS Cloud File Storage solutions including Amazon S3, FSx, EFS, Netapp, Azure Blob, and Azure Files.On-premises NAS and SAN storage systems from Dell, NetApp, and IX Systems.Using data management tools such as Globus, Komprise, Starfish, robocopy, and rsync.Scripting command line and API with a focus on automating the migration, replication, and archiving data across on-premises and cloud storage systems.Networking and storage technologies as well as high availability, failover, and load balanced environments.Primarily working during the day, must be willing to work evening and night as required to support a 24-hour, seven-day operation.

Experience in complex systems analysis, enterprise IT services, and design in addition to administrative experience. IT experience administering and maintaining cloud-based, IT enterprise services, and other mission critical technology systems for a large institution. Combination of education, experience and/or industry certifications will be considered in lieu of listed education/experience levels.
