Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity

The Northwest Region (NWR) is eager to hire an experienced engineer looking to advance their career to assist in the delivery of WSDOT projects as Assistant Project Engineer in our Burlington project office. This position will provide required project oversight as a licensed professional engineer, oversee contract preparation, and facilitate the administration of designing and constructing contracts to ensure timely completion with the least amount of impact to the traveling public. The appointee to this position is expected to consider personal, coworker, and public safety as their top priority during the planning and performance of all project activities.  
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Project Engineer will:

  • Ensure all assigned projects are managed according to WSDOT policy, delivered on or before scheduled due date, within or under budgeted amount, and are constructible, maintainable, and cost effective for all stakeholders and customers. 
  • Strategically plan the budget, schedule, and workforce necessary to deliver capital improvement projects. 
  • Partner with internal departments and external agencies, consultants, and public entities regarding what provisions will be addressed in the project development process for each project and executing the resulting requirements in construction contracts. 
  • Report on the status of assigned projects to WSDOT Regional and Executive leadership to support and improve the accountability of WSDOT. 
  • Coordinate input and resolve conflicts with internal organizations, personnel, external agencies, contractors, consultants, and the general public. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Civil Engineering within the State of Washington or the ability to obtain within six months of appointment. 
  • Current driver’s license. 

 

In addition to:

  • Ability to manage and monitor budgets for multiple projects
  • Knowledge of:
    1. Highway design and planning, specification and estimate preparation
    2. Highway construction and construction practices
    3. Surveying and surveying practices. 
    4. WSDOT highway engineering practices, technical procedures and management processes. 
    5. Environmental laws, regulations, and issues. 
    6. Programming and budget procedures

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Ability to communicate effectively to develop and implement long-term plans and facilitate conversations between competing interests. 
  • Knowledge and experience of the Legislative processes.
