Facilities Services supports the mission of the University of Chicago through efforts to maintain and enhance the University campus and environment and provide superior client service to our community including faculty, students, staff, neighbors and visitors.


Job Information

Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to all training requirements as established by the personal qualification standards (PQS).
  • Provide Journeymen and Helpers in the field with general assistance of the completion of their work.
  • Using pick-list or work order provided, organize and make ready materials for various projects. Deliver as required to job site at appropriate time.
  • Pick-up materials from local suppliers and deliver to shop or job site as directed.
  • Assist with neat and accurate restocking of shop materials as necessary.
  • Remove from job sites all extra materials and dispose of debris, leaving job site clean of materials, debris, tools and equipment.
  • General shop cleaning, and all general work areas, both interior and exterior.
  • Gather materials for workers to handle on job sites.
  • Keep job sites clean and equipment serviced.
  • Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Uses appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Uses computers to enter and access job related information.
  • Undertakes training related to job duties as deemed necessary by the University.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

Additional Requirements​​
 

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Experience working in the skilled trades as a laborer is preferred.
  • Knowledge and use of common skilled trade tools and machines is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must successfully complete the University’s Motor Vehicle Records process required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to access computer programs and use or learn basic computer operations related to position requirements required. 
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical functions relevant to the position required.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity and be physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and move loads appropriate to job requirements and be able to bend and work in a kneeling position for periods of time.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, be capable of working at heights as required, be able to enter and work within tight spaces, and be able to withstand hot and cold temperatures.

Pay Rate:

  • $15.00
