Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire an experienced engineer looking to advance their career into a leadership role and serve as our next Design Build Manager. As the Design Build Manager, this position is responsible for the daily project management and oversight of WSDOT Design-Build staff. Reporting directly to the Project Engineer, this position is responsible for construction/design oversight and quality management. A successful appointee will have extensive knowledge of a complex construction project’s daily operation with an ability to identify work activities with the greatest risk of failure. The Design Build Manager will play a vital role in WSDOT's successful delivery of WSDOT projects, maintaining public confidence and helping the public travel safely.
 
What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Build Manager will:

  • Manage oversight of Design-Build project(s), participating and/or facilitating the evaluation of Design-Build proposals. 
  • Interpret and explain contractual language as well as complex civil engineering plans and specifications. 
  • Manage project risk through the review and resolution of issues related to the project and ensure adherence to WSDOT policies, procedures, and standards. 
  • Review Design-builder submittals including design documents, released for construction plans, and working drawings for contract compliance and constructability issues. 
  • Review monthly schedule updates and progress payments related to assigned work for verification of schedule activity progress and logical sequence between activities.  
  • Attend Design-Builder project task force and schedule meetings for the purpose of discussing the project schedule, quality and issue resolution to facilitate completion of the project.
  • Provide project updates on project progress, project related issues, potential schedule and change impacts. 

 

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • One (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 3 in construction, design, and/or design-build work or equivalent construction and/or design build engineering experience, OR 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License

In addition to:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Bachelors degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or closely related field of study, OR
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification
  • Proficient in reading, understanding, and interpreting complex construction contract plans, technical requirements, special provisions, and standard specifications. 
  • Knowledge of transportation engineering, construction work methods, personnel management, estimating and risk analysis and scheduling. 
  • Proficient in the use of computer software programs including Microsoft Excel and Word. 

 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Professional Engineering License
  • Two (2) years of Design-Build experience on complex engineering projects as a Transportation Engineer 3
